Electricians advise New Oven : )

Just got a new Oven and Hobb… being a gas fitter the Hobb went straight in… but the wiring for the Oven im not 100% on…

Theres a terminal for Neutral and live but the Earth looks like it screws to the Plate….

But didnt want to just go straight ahead and do this incase I bugger it up.

Also Is plug and socket with a nice thick bit of wire ok (as thats what the last one had for 15 years)

Cheers for any advice guys

Put ring terminals on the wires. also whats the rating (kw) that will depend on if you need to run it on a spur.

Normally single ovens are low kw but doubles will need a big cable.

It's a single Oven Rated at 2.8 kw, I have plenty of thick wire to wire it up but just was'nt 100% on where to put the earth wire as the screw in the picture is just a screw… no washer or grip washer etc which would of led me to belive that it's obivoulsy for the earth… there is also an earth sign on the top of the Oven at the back with a couple of screw holes but miles away from this termianl plate.

i would run another earth from the other terminal you mention to the terminal pictured above, then put your cable earth on it as well. can never have too many earths ;)

Its in now but not a Bad idea as I imagine the other earth would be to earth the metal casing around the Oven…
earth earth earth, the word means nothing to me now  :?

You could run 2.8 kw oven off a spur or plug top, both rated at 13amps,

Also you should be able to locally isolate the oven without moving the oven or by
switching off by the main fuse,  for easyness and not having
switched spurs or 20amp double pole switches above work top level (for isolation purposes only) I tend to put them in the unit next to the oven.

All appliances in the kitchen should have accessible points of isolation, fridge, extractor hood, washing machines and so on.

thanks for the info, I have a twin socket mounted under the kick board which i can get to without moving the oven. is this safe?

I cannot tell you it's safe from a testing point of view but it is sort of accessible and you can isolate the oven from it, that's how the reg's put it.

If it was me I would see if I could put the socket in the unit just in case you ever did need to switch it off after your missis sets fire to the Sunday roast haha
