If you get a Frontera, take my advice and check when it last had
the timing belt changed!.
I bought one 2 yrs ago, 50,000 mls good condition never been off
road etcc.. etc.. .
It lasted 8 months, timing belt went ( I didnt check it when I bought it)
So got a bill for ?1000, 8O had it back 2 weeks and the big end went 8O
Sold it (unrepaired) and bought another VW (Passat).
Ime sure you know all of this anyway!
Best Regards

Land Rovers rock!! ooops wrong site ops:
I think one needs to make their mind up with where your car interests lie. Once you get away from needing to choose a car based on practicality and cost reasons, if its a daily driver, then there are a whole host of options open.
Land Rovers are great - a friend of mine has loads of them and she actively uses them off road too. You can have a lot of fun, especially if you also get into fitting V8s, etc. Hers has an American V8 diesel conversion, and is wonderful to drive.
Campers, splittys and bays especially (but any camper really) are a whole lot of fun, I've personally spend many weeks, months and years tinkering with them (I converted a panel van into one, and before that I had a bay window). They're also very handy for shows.
Big old American V8s can be fun too, in their own wacky way.
The other thing I got into was old Mercedes'. They are a class above VW, and driving one is an experience everyone should have at least once in their life.
But, when it comes down to it, day-to-day I'd still choose a Mk1 Golf, my enthusiasm for these is enduring and it still manages to roll up fun, character and practicality into a highly desirable package. Once both (cabby and GTI) of mine are working, I may even sell the Merc daily driver…
