Does anyone else suffer from this problem?

This week while in work a bloke turned up on the forecourt and asked if the GTi was mine and if it was for sale. I looked over at the car and asked him could he see any For Sale signs, he said no. I then politely  told him then no it isn't for sale. 20 minutes later the same bloke called at my house and asked my missus if I was willing to sell one of my GTis, fairplay to her she said  pretty much the same thing.

Now its nice to have the cars admired and taken to the shows but this seems to be happening quite a bit to me where I live, just wondering if anyone here gets this kind of cold calling.

had quit a few stopping whilst im working on the car and asking if i want to sell it I gave exactly the same answer as you (to the letter!! ) but i agree that is out of order knocking on your door 20 mins after being told no

It's not as if Mk1 GTIs are like rocking horse poo to find for sale. He should go and find one in the conventional way like most other people have had to!  :roll: I guess people think they have nothing to lose and there's no harm in asking. I don't know why he would call back later and ask again though…stalker looney alert!  

Not had much people offering to buy mine apart from a guy in the 1st petrol station I filled it up in about 2 miles down the road from where I bought it no more than about 5 mins after I'd handed over the cash for it myself.. Other than that just the odd person coming over and having a chat about it.

why do you consider it a problem?

For one I find it like cold calling and I don't like it, also I wouldn't go past someones house stop poke around their car on their drive then ask is it for sale. If it had a Big sign saying For Sale then its invited but otherwise no. Also he told my missus he didn't have access to the internet to find one which I found quite strange in this day and age.

I'm sure he can get a library card then use their computers for the internet free of charge! Reading 'For Sale' sections in WH Smith motoring magazines is also free if you don't buy them afterwards  :wink: Besides, he can buy some magazines, he's obviously got enough money if he's looking to buy your car!
When all's said and done, having such an old and good-looking car does attract attention, it has to, some of it not as welcomed as the general rubber-necking we all enjoy getting. It's a burden us classic car owners have to bear!  

i have done it in the past, seen a nice classic (DO NOT TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY!  i havent seen your car) thats not concours but obviously used and in good nick(or fixable), and either waited or left a note for the owner, on the off chance that they have had it for ages and dont know what its worth, had a really nice 65 bug for £300 ( drove it for 5 years!) and a mint 72 bug for £150 sold one month later for £1300    if you dont ask you dont get

The guy who balanced the wheels on my Rivage during my first week of ownership offered to buy it from me, then my next door neighbour the week later. Sadly, when I needed to sell it years later, neither were in the position to buy it!

I did leave a few notes in terrible French when I was looking for a LHD replacement…none called! I was desperate though and figured it was worth a shot! Would have loved someone to have offered to buy my Rivage when I needed to sell it.

Personally i beleive that if you don't ask you dont get. My dad once came across a pug 205, in near mint condition, and thought it would be a nice run about for my mum. He left a note on the windscreen and it turns out the owner was considering putting it up for sale already! Turned out to serve my family well for a good few years, awesome little car. Fair play if you didnt want to sell, but I dont see anything wrong with showing an interest. (Though his second visit can certainly be frowned upon…)

I took my mk2 G60 edition one to Germany 2wks ago,stayed with a friends parents over there,who live 20mins outside Wolfsburg. A guy who lives accross the street from them works for VW,he is a design engineer,he told me he designs the styling of the Golf sports models(GTI/R32 etc).Anyway,he knocked at the door of my mates parents wanting to know if the Edition One was for sale!He said his father had one when he was younger and he would love to buy it as he hadnt seen one in that condition since back then.I told him i had no plans to sell it,but sparked up a 2hr conversation with the guy anyway,he has a nice collection of BMW`s,hes got a mint e30 M3,an e30 325is as an everydayer with an amazing 298k kms on the clock,and also on the drive he has an e36 compact with a 6cyl M3 eng fitted.I spotted the e30 m3 on his drive last yr when i was there in one of my mk1`s and he said he remembered seeing it and wondered if it could be the same person.He gave me his work business card and said to keep in touch,great guy!

I agree. Firstly it's nice to have someone admiring your car and asking if it's for sale. BUT, to then call round so soon after is down right rude, especially when they may see it as planting a seed in the Mrs' mind. What you don't want is for her to then pressure you about selling your pride and joy !

As far as i am concerned my cars are always for sale, just need to offer me enough money to temp me.  At the moment it would be somewhere around the 15k mark.  I dont think someone pulling up and asking me if i want to sell my car is willing to pay that for some reason!!!

exactly. if some one had asked if your/my car was for sale and you/i said no, then 20 mins later knocked on your/my door offering £30k, would you still be upset?

Hell fire knock on the door and a offer of 30k they could take the Mrs and the cat as well, and I will throw in a box of Kitty kat……….

i had a guy asking to buy mine the day after i bought her, told him no, he was still trying to get her 20 mins later, every time this guy comes to the shop he asks, still gets the same response though

cant blame him for asking, he got good taste
