Corrado VR6

Im going to look at a Corrado VR6 on sunday with the intention of using it as a daily drive 50/50 with my suzuki swift sport (im getting a bit bored of it) over the winter.

Does anyone know of any little horrors i should be wary of? As far i know  the engine was rebuilt a few years back with new timing chains fitted. Sunroof and spoiler both work. Heater switch works but the fan is stuck on windscreen and feet.

Has quite a few mods fitted but he is happy to take some out as im not interested in a ?1800 ICE system.

One thing he has is a Shrick manifold which appears to be the dogs danglies but i dont know if i wanna pay him for it.

Any pointers will be greatfully recieved.

Bear in mind, there's no Haynes manual for a VR6 Corrado. You can buy a Bentley manual though. And that its a fat Scirocco. Still nice tho.

if the engine's been rebuilt with new chains then there shouldn't be much to worry about!

check the rear beam bushes as apparently they're prone to wear (but what do you expect for a 14yr + old car)

almost all corrado's have had paint at some point or another… make sure you do a vehicle check on it as I've had one that was CAT B twice over (should have been scrapped!).. usual accident damage areas - rear panel/boot floor and front inner wings, check them well

the corrado forum has a load of info (and maybe a checklist if I remember correctly) so print it out and take it with you

good luck

No horrors from the 'rado but it'd definately be horrific the 50% of the time you are driving the Swift!

Have a search n google for the VR6owners website - either that or if you are on PVW Forum, ask "Guy" about VR's.

Cheers guys, thanks for the pointers.

Ill give registering with the corrado forum another go too.

"No horrors from the 'rado but it'd definately be horrific the 50% of the time you are driving the Swift! " You would be surprised at how much fun the swift is, i certainly was. Im just missing my VW fix as i cant bring myself to use my mk1 when its raining etc.

They must have improved the Swift alot then!  we had one as a curtousy (sp) car once while the Alfa was in the garage.  It was awful!  All the throttle pedal did was make it louder, not faster and it went round corners like the Queen Mary in her initial sea trails!

A fat scirroco? 100% definately not, the "sky rocket" is an Ugly beast of a thing, especially the later ones! the Corrado has to be one of the pretiest designs of any VW, and they handle superbly out the box, its a proper GT car, especially with the G60 or the VR6 engine

things like door handles, sunroof motor, spoiler, seem to be the main problem areas on them, as long as the body is solid and all the trim inside is good thats the main things, loads of specialists who can fix corrado niggles!

I was taking advantage of the forum members deep and broad knowledge of VWs in the General Chat area where it is forbiden to mention Mk1s..

Each to their own really, but at the end of the day im looking for something from the VW garage that is more practical everyday than a MK1 rocco.. powersteering etc that my wife will also drive if i get drunk and hand her the keys. lol

As with most/all cars, because its more modern it has more kit, including power steering, and its easier to live with day-day and stuff like that. For the above scenario, its great. But they are quite heavy so they kinda need the VR6 to help them along, and they will lack the nimble charm of a Scirocco, even though its fatter tyres will give more ultimate grip.

Because they're lower, therefore centre of gravity is lower too, the Corrado or Scirocco will always give slightly better handling than its equivalent hatchback of the era. (The Corrado is based on Mk2 Golf front end mechanicals and Mk3 Golf rear end stuff, with a good mix of Passat stuff and its own stuff too, of course).

But are you really buying a coupe for its practicality, or its looks/sporty drive?

? you sound like Adolf hitler!!!

you vil only discuss zee mk vun golf at all times!! snell snell!!

Mk1 scirocco storm is a lovely car, later ones are hideous/pointles The Corrado is NOT a Georgeto Guigaro designed car,  therefore has Nothing to do with a scirocco, its based on the mk2 golf and a passat! and the only thing they have in common with the scirocco is it has 2 doors! and a coupe shape.

some people need to take the blinkers off when it comes to appreciating other Volkwagens

Mk2 Sciroccos are well-sorted mechanically and are actually very good driving and handling cars. They also have way more interior room than the Mk1 Scirocco. I think when you buy/own a coupe it comes down to irrational factors such as others' perceptions of your car's looks, or your own; or some kind of image due to its rarity. For this reason, Mk2 Scirocco doesn't quite tick all the boxes for me. I have secretly wanted a Corrado for a long time but I'd want a VR6 auto Storm, and there's only 10 in each colour! Oh well.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the 'rado, good cars, especially with the vr lump.  I ran a corrado vr for a couple of years and it was a pleasure to own, look after it and it will return the favour.
As said the vr6 owners club/corrado.net are good source of info and support during ownership.

Storms arent that rare, Auto ones maybe, but for a "driving" car the manual is spot on! the rarest of the rare is the "campaign" corrado! only 6 made and all had brick red leather seats! theres one for sale at a dealers for 8k at the moment, but its been in a smash and is a cat C!!!!!!!!
