Close call last thursday...

I've been telling my friends this story and forgot to post it on the forums, might get long!

My girlfriend, three of her friends and myself deceided to go to Edinburgh so filled her up (the car that is), picked them all up and headed to the A1.

I was approaching a blind corner on a national speed limit single carriageway. I was doing 50 miles per hour, the corner was on a hill and was a very shallow corner but was impossible to see around it.

As I was approaching the corner about 100 meters out a larger truck comes around the corner. Immediately after this a blue estate car driven by some retarded middle aged man comes barreling along my side of the road in excess of 70mph. When I saw this idiot I was about 70 meters at the most from having a head on collision, and as you may figure out 70 plus 50 makes 120… Means I'm approaching him very quickly.

Managed to think first before reacting, shone my beams then immediately switched down to 3rd gear, hit the brakes and moved the car half way onto the grass verge JUST avoiding this car. After a heart attack moment I pulled over and took a deep breathe.

What really pissed me off wasn't the fact I nearly crashed my pride and joy but if I didn't pull to the left none of the 5 of us would be alive now, hitting a steel stream lined object at 120 miles per hour doesn't work.

This was the closest I've ever came to death whilst driving and have had a few near misses and to know that there was nothing more I could have done to avoid the accident honestly scared the **** out of me.

If I had the frame of mind after this I would've turned round, chased his ass down and explain to him my annoyance but obviously I didn't and just pulled over for a few minutes.

My girlfriend who sat in the front seat noticed what had happened but the three girls in the back just said:

"Why are we stopped?"

To which I replied:

"We nearly died…"

this is one really annoying thing that cars drivers do. as an artic driver i see idiots like this all the time, they just cant stand to be behind a truck even if its only doing 10mph less than a car they just need to be in front and will take stupid risks to do it. and its ALWAYS an idiot in a **** car not a quick one but some cr@ppy under powered saloon. :banghead:

Something similar happened to me a few weeks back in my Peugeot 306. Going home in the dark went round a corner only to be faced with 2 sets of headlights coming towards me. I pulled on to the grass verge to avoid a collision and the girl who was overtaking only just missed me, lost it and went through a hedge. After we found her car in a field (about 50 metres or more in) the guy who went to talk to her said she reeked of drink   Not cool if she was drunk.  No excuses if she had have wiped me, my pregnant missus and our 6 year old daughter out.  We left her to it being cut out of the car after we gave statements. The person she was actually overtaking didnt even stop. 8O

My car is now in shock though. Head gasket went two days after this happened and as soon as I got it back from that the diesel pump went!

Hope she got a huge driving ban, shorstuff, there's no excuse for driving while drunk and absolutely none for overtaking on a blind corner. If I was you I probably would've given her some choice words when she's stuck in her car.

Not heard anything more about it so far. Will be pretty annoyed if she doesnt at least get done for dangerous driving. I think I should get someting for my Peugeot going into shock though  Cost me a packet so far.

The only thing you can do, is use your horn if the corner is a blind one. Sounds like you did good to avoid the other car!

Sorry to hear that.

My most scary moment was when I was overtaking someone and they pulled out straight into me….at 70mph!

Luckily I was in a Mk4 Golf, braked hard and went into the centre barrier.

Lucky I didn't spin around and the road was quiet.

And the car still drove!!!!

I am on the road a lot and one day a Fiesta suddenly started to move erratically across the road. Then violently moved from inside, to outside, to inside lane again straight in front of me!

I followed the racing car drivers method - aim for the car as it won't be there when you arrive.

Then it just stopped and parked up perfectly on the hard shoulder.

Driving really sucks sometimes :( Would be safe if there was no-one else ont he roads.
