Christmas Cabriolet guide
I'm a newbie here. I myself own a 1986 Christmas Cabriolet which I purchased last summer for ?550 with only a few minor jobbies needing to be done (bit of a roof tear but what do you expect for a 20 year old car). The guy luckily also had the original guide about it from VW which I thought I would post here as it's still damn hard to try and find anywhere any kind of info and there's still a lot of very confused people out there!
Here is the love of my life:
Here is the guide:

Nice car. How did you fix the roof tears? I have a small tear either side where roof folds above front seats. Covered with duct tape now.

So far I haven't done anything except have the exhaust replaced, because it was blowing like hell and in the quiet roads of Norfolk and Lincs I sounded like some kinda girl racer with nothing to prove.
Some things that need doing:
1) Hood - yes it does have a 4 inch slice in it like someone's stabbed it with a kitchen knife. My fathers favourite implement is insulation tape and it looked even worse after he stuck this crap on it. The first rain came and it all came off though….luckily. The cab does not actually leak AT ALL despite these holes and tears. It is however stored safely in a barn on our farm with the hood up but not secured, so as it wouldn't slacken. I didn't leave it down though as I didn't want it to crease, and our kitties have a habit of exploring!
My dad thinks he knows someone who can repair the hood - it may cost as much as a new hood but I'd rather have the original on it!
2) Suspension is shot - no matter. I wanted to drop it 40mm anyway but as I'm a student having to pay my way through a shoe design course next year I can't afford to do everything at once. Obviously I have to sort the suspension out or it won't pass MOT.
3) Wheels are in need of attention. I tried to dremel them, I honestly did! But they are such annoying angles its damn hard to polish! I can't afford the ?200 refurb. I do however have some tasty 15" deep dish Mims I'd like to put on instead. They are a hell of a lot easier to refurb.
4) Seats - they are in good nick. Only one small rip in driver seat. Am good at textiles so will repair myself.
5) Rust spots - bf promises he's going to get a mini paint gun to do these for me. And after all, white is the easiest colour to match!
6) Radio - I've got a hideous modern radio in there, albeit cassette. I want the old skool flavour in there, for my Genesis tapes!
Also, does anyone have a clue what a good one would sell for? I don't want to, but I am thinking about getting some kind of value put on it should the worst, god forbid, happen. Some (personally I think, silly) person I read about on the Club GTI forum bought one without any of the original interior for ?2000! (A clipper or something I could understand but we don't get big bumpers or nowt on ours!) TBH, I know I was damn lucky to get mine for the price I did considering its rarity value but he needed the money to pay council tax bill and i had the cash……….

Thats how I want it to look in a couple of years time when I'm as famous as Jimmy Choo! Maybe even next summer depending on how nice the tax office is about my refund!

As for pimpin my ride, I'm going to be keeping it fairly original, I think it deserves it. I just think it looks a little better with a lower ride height and as I spent over the odds on the Mim wheels (?255 in crappy condition) I don't really want to sell them as I'll never get my money back on them and might as well use them, they've been hanging about for 4 yrs waiting for a purpose!
I dont remember seeing a Pulsar, I was too busy directing lloyd where to point the camera!

And bathy, urs is lush also.
Sorry I hope i didn't pee anyone off about the moddin thing. It's just really because it is a CC that I wanted to keep it original. If it was just a normal cabby I'd change it and it'd have a clipper kit on it asap, but with (so I've heard) less than 250 in the world, keeping it original seemed like the most sensible thing and correct thing to do.
I love my cabby don't get me wrong, I wouldn't swap it for a clipper now because I love the rarity aspect. Thats y I didn't want a hard top really, just like to be a bit different (plus I had a sort of romantic view of driving around in the hot sun with the top down). And that's no disrespect to you hard toppers out there, my bf's rebuilt a lovely tropical orange mk1 2litre 16v
I just hope the weather is good next summer, I got a mk4 facelift polo turbo diesel, which while it is a good daily driver isn't half as fun as the cabby. Although the leccy steering is a godsend with the parking situ in Portsmouth!

oh u r mean, I really really really wanted a red clipper but just didn't ever have enough cash
Its not a clipper though 8O , its a 1992 J reg sportline Gti in Flash red, only 450 made and last of the line of mk1 cabs, it has the recaro interior, which is a bonus, here are a few pics from the original VW brochure, this A3 size booklet also includes the rivage leather and cloth interior rivage models as well as the last of the line basic cabriolet
