Think the loaction Haynes refers to is for pre 1980 cars. Post 1980 cars such as yours should have it on lip of scuttle panel as you have found. Got a genuine campaign, by the sound of it

:? sound like you've already identified it, sorry not very clear description that I gave.
Chassis number should be imprinted into the top of metal panel that divides the scuttle from the engine bay. Number is to the left just behind the long rubber seal that runs along the lip of the scuttle panel. The flimsy plastic scuttle/wiper mechanism cover should have a little transparent plastic window in it which allow you to see the chassis number with it in place.
Cheers

Terry,
There should be a window in the flimsy plastic thing - gives an indication of where the chassis number is. It is stamped into the metal infront of the heater just behind the lip that holds the seal that runs accross the back of the engine bay.

Hi All
Is it the EW no??? The number on the VIN plate??
Oh Hell!! I sent all the info to Wolfsburg museum to find out about history, (all the figures on the VIN plate) and they came back saying it would cost and to send the 'chassis no' as well!! (which I did). Who feels a right pr*t now…..I started getting worried….I even had a look underneath to make sure of 'no welding'.
Tks again everyone
