CARB VS INJECTION
got my Clipper back from the body shop,
done a great job, colour match is sweet..
cleaned out fuel lines, replaced filler neck..
just a huge clean up , inside and out,and a little service,
and im ready for summer.
Great to drive the little gem again,
id forgotten how well the standard 1800 carb engine goes..
smooth and responsive..
very close to the gti i feel
what are the performance differences ?

Well bald power figures state 90 bhp versus 112 for the two 1.8 engines. Condition and servicing will make quite a different though. The most noticeably difference in my book is that the carb 1.8 gets a bit breathless at higher revs. This is mostly due to a very soft cam and a constrictive exhaust manifold, both of which can be changed…!

Drew.

mine does feel very close to a pals sporline,
sportline has done higher miles though,
by 20k,
but i may look into a slight cam change

some of the late rivage's and sportlines have a catalyst so will feel a bit slower than the non cat GTIs.
As drew said a cam and manifold would work wonders

I think carburettor gearbox ratios gave approx 25mph/1000rpm vs. the GTI @20mph/1000rpm so the GTI gained 25% of its 'power' and acceleration from lower gearing not engine output. Not much fun on a motorway and the carburettor taller cruising gearing probably suits the Cabriolet ethos better. Show rather than go. :dontknow:

what increase in powere would cam/pipe gane ?
i dont really want a boysey loud exhaust, would a manifold change do the job,
wouldnt this make the car prone to being more unrealiable ?

I had a 1.8 clipper on which I changed the cam, exhaust manifold and the carb (to a weber).
Result : Utterly transformed the car from fairly sluggish to more than GTI quick. Loved it. Handling on standard clipper faire was a bit ropey though!

on the subject of Injection V's carb i have to vote for carb every time. i know it's not as efficient. the carb needs tuning periodicaly, doesn't give as much power and takes more fuel. these points are not in debate. my point is this. i like to be in control of the car. an injection system is programed. it keeps the engine running when it really shouldn't. it varies the mixture when you don't tell it to. after you rev it, it adjusts the mixture again to slow the engine down to idle. I haven't asked it to do that. a carb doesn't do that, maybe i'm a tad picky or too old fasioned. i was raised with carbs. i drive an old car purely so that i can have a carb. i pick the golf because its the best of the bunch but for me theirs no contest. it's purely a matter of taste.
this is the sauce wars over again. you either like brown sauce or you like red. both go in the same place, both do similar things but they do it in very different ways.
I prefer injection, because it keeps the engine running, makes starting easier and gives more power!

I'm with Paul_C on this, Injection is loads more realiable, more efficient and most importantly has the most power unless you spend loads on throttle bodies which still use a kind of injection too.
I like K-jet as its mechanical system is very responsive (like a carb) starts in the morning with out have to worry about chokes or flooding the engine etc (unlike a carb)

Im with drew. Weber carb with Gti cam and manifold change.
One step onward was to change the worn solid lifter head to a Ported 1.8 GTI digipants head. The differnce is awesome on my 1.6GL. Keeps up well with my m8`s Mk2 1.8GTI every where, but even better it pulls from him on the motorway as the GTI MK2 revs runs out due to the shorter gearbox. 8O Im gona rolling road it when iam at TSR
I just wished i hade the 1.8 carbed version. and a kent cam!

an injection system is programed.
There are just different ways of "programming" them, whether its adjusting screws, changing jets, using larger throttle bodies, remapping the ECU it can all be done on carbs or injection. The point is injection systems don't need as much re-programming as they are able to utilise more factors to control efficiency and power better than a carb.

Whether carb or injection, they have to adjust the mixture depending on how much you press on the throttle, etc! Most carbs also have auto enriching for cold starts, etc. So both adjust mixture depending on the driver and the environment.

So where's the sensors on a K-Jet MK1 exhaust?
K-Jet is anologue and pretty basic compared to modern electronic digital (<10 years old) stuff.
I think you are confusing it with current systems with ECUs and shed loads of electricery festooned around the engine.
If arses were smart they would know what they were talking about before putting it in to print…..
What dubboys doesn't know about MK1s isn't worth knowing.
