car bra`s WTH?

can anyone explain to me the purpose of car bra`s, surely no-one would use something that looks so ridiculous just to stop a few stone chips on their bonnet?
i`ve been reading PVW and golf+ and they seem to regard them as a massively attractive bit of kit. i just don`t get it. :dontknow:

i am pretty sure you have hit the nail on the head in both areas. The Americans love them. :dontknow:

1. To prevent stone chips (maybe stray cows in America)
2. They are ugly as sin!

Maybe they are 'retro' these days…  :|

Some look wrong and I do see your point.  However, I think this looks superb and am considering getting one :)

i think that cab would look even more fantastic without it though.  :dontknow:

the reason that people put them on is to differentiate their car from all others. the car in the above photo would look pretty stock apart from the D90's, but with the bonnet bra, it is something totally different.

All my value judgements of course.

P.S. I know there are loads of different mods to the car!

It does look lovely doesn't it! same colour as my Rivage by the looks of it and ultimately the look I want to achieve only with different wheels and with out the odd looking steering wheel (is that yellow?)

The pics are used on the Going Fast ebay ad for the bras so I have no idea who's it is but I'm guessing it's German owned!

You'll find the ebay ad HERE

I have heard horror stories about them trapping moisture between the leather and the paint. Not even G3 will get the 'misting' out.

I know a chap who uses one to take his car to and from shows. Obviously to prevent stone chips. It works perfectly for that. However, if these things are left on the car without proper cleaning ect all kinds of terrible things can happen. Grit and dirt gets underneath and then scratches away under movement from the wind when driving. Salt from the road can get underneath and cause far more damage than a few stone chips.

I know this because I went over to canada a couple of years ago and you could see cars everywhere that had had these things taken off. There was a distinct line where the paint was completely shot, with rust and scratches all over, going to nice paint where the bra was not fitted!

So use one for long motorway drives and show cars for a particular look.. But for permenant use, clean it and remove it when you wash your car, or all the grit settles underneath! You have been warned!  8O

the one above is not that bad, the ones they seem to get most excited about in magazines are the ones with two flappy bits sticking up at the rear end of the bra. (i hate the name as well :x )

surely a better means of protecting your bonnet front would be to stick some clear plastic film over it. they do this with ferrari`s and other top-end cars and you can`t evn see it till you get really close.

If it stops you getting 100s of stone chips from motorway driving then i cant see why it would be an ugly item?
I think they look ok when fitted and do the job they were meant for, if you have some ratty old ride then maybe you dont mind a few dings in the bonnet?
but as said show cars and ones that are kept in tip top condition it saves having your bonnet wrecked by all the crud that accumulates on our roads and expensive painting, especially metallics as the wings have to be blended to match if you have your bonnet done.
as said not ideal to leave on the car permanantly though as it does leave a line and can hold moisture in the bra
Porsche and Ferrari use plastic film but i think that looks worse! especially a few years down the line when it starts deteriorating and going a yellow colour
