CALLING ALL SKATER DUDES...

I'm looking to get my 10 year old a Skateboard but I know nothing about what's best to buy nowadays.

If anyone out there is in to Skateboarding and can point me at something decent but not to pricey for a beginner to learn on, I'd be more than grateful.

Cheers

The local A&E department broken bones unit. :wheelchair:

I used to have one when they 1st came out and was not bad at it back then mind you it was 35 yrs ago we started with a book straped to a rollerskate

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

At ten i'd suggest a full size pro deck tbh, I rode one at 10-11 year old.

Something cheap like this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/31-Pro-Skateboard-Dark-Maple-Deck-abec-3-Bearings-/300364446545?pt=UK_Sporting_Goods_Skateboarding_Skating_ET&hash=item45ef1dbb51

You want to worry more about protection Tian, learning to skate is a painfull process.

Cheers guys, he's pretty good on his Heely things and he loves his Scooter so it's time he upgraded to something cool! I want him to be one of the first in his year too as that'll give him extra 'cool points'

Bruce mate, I've PMed you back!

I donated my skateboard to my little cousin, was a full Tony Hawk Birdhouse Deck with all the trimmings at least 170's worth.

Kinda wished I hadn't but I was 27 at the time and thought i'd best grow up a bit!

Head, wrist, elbow and knee protection required… and a whole lot of crazy!  8O

I used to have:-

Skateboard = Powell Peralta - Ripper & Santa Cruz Monster Hand
Wheels = Cockroaches then Powell G Bones
Trucks (axles) = Independents not sure which ones
Bearings = Enuff Swiss
Rails = Vision
Pig Risers

This will be jibberish to most people but I loved skating… I was proper into it and it cost a fortune!!!

T depends how far you let him go but hope you know what you're getting him into…. basically it's an open wallet… especially now as they have skate parks… we used to just demolish stairs, curbs, shopping centres etc…

Check this out…

Not sure on prices any more but the retro decks, trucks, wheels, bearings, risers and ribs bring back memories.

By the way it'll cost you more in boards but only get a thin tail-kick…. the plastic bit underneath the tail.    This stops the board from scratching but they are rubbish when they are big because they stop you doing high "Ollies"    :banghead:

Cheers mate but you've met me. I'm old and that's way too much information and choice! I don't know which way to look an that site.

It has shown me what kind of price we;'re talking about though as reasonable so thanks!

My first Deck (DeathBoX) was built by Sean Goff at SS20 in Oxford back in the early ninetys.

Google him, he has an ebay shop (TODDTWIST on Ebay)… LEG END!!

my advice would be dont by the best of everything as you'll be wasting money…… i've been skating for the last ten or so years and have rode pretty much every make truck/board/bearing going and i currently have 5 full set-ups! so heres my 2pence worth:

dont get him a fancy pro deck with all the graphics. just get a plain but decent one powell use to do them but any decent skate shop will have some good quality blank decks.

trucks are worth buying decent ones as its what lets you steer etc. in my experience royal and independent are the best and will last him for years if hes just starting out.

wheels and bearings again dont spend silly money on pro models and ceramic bearings they are a rip off. any plain wheels and the basic bearings will be fine…

always get some good quality grip tape too.

the above shouldnt cost you more than £100 ish and will last him ages as he learns ;)

some decent chunky skate shoes will help him learn too i know that sounds weird but trust me

roller snakes seem to be doing some good complete boards
http://rollersnakes.co.uk/home.php?cat=7767

the deck that lasted me the longest/ was the most enjoyable to skate, was a darkstar that i spotted in the window of my local skate shop, they were closing down so did it for £40, was well chuffed, they were ridiculously priced at the time. Im not sure how the boards that they make atm compare,

at 10 i dont think hes at risk of breaking a decent setup, so i guess its down to how long hes gonna be interested in it

Thanks for all the replies guys, I now feel very old.

His birthday is on the 15th so anytime soon after that I'll post up some pics or even a little video, failing that you can wait for 'You've Been Framed' to air his first spill!

Not sure where you're based but we do lessons at The Works in Leeds,

If you're not near us, worth looking for an indoor park, nice safe place to learn!

You've got Bay66 in London, which is a pretty good indoor park as far as they go!
