Lack of use really does for cars.
I'd try and spray some oil down the blower spindles and spin by hand and make sure all the electrical connectors are clean and tight and see that that frees it up.

you need to remove the wiper asssembly
then unbolt and remove the grill covering the motor
unbolt and disconnect the the motor
then you need to seperate the motor into 2 halves, its only clip together
now with a bit of jiggling you should be able to remove the 2 halves of the motor one at a time
fitting is the reverse of the above
Old dubs never die, they just get lower

I no longer have the Mk1!! I now whizz round in a Black 1990 3dr Mk2 GTi 8v but the roof doesn't fold back when the sun shines
