Bike rack on a Golf, any experiences
Hi All,
I have a Mk1 Golf with original paint. Wondered if anyone has had good or bad experiences with this, any particular make of bike rack that works.
Please mention if you have original paintwork- this is a lot weaker than modern day resprays and makes a difference.
Thanks,
Mark.

i dropped my car off 4 weeks ago with a bike rack attached to the original paint work. i will not be putting it back on when the paints finished.
i never had any issues with it. i wrapped anything that touched the car in rubber (innertubes no less) and used a towel underneath it on the rear screen and tailgate.
i have however dropped a bike from a roof mounted rack at 60 going down a country road.
mine rack is a cheap 3 bike rack from motorworld but it is about 10 years old now.
have you considered a tow bar and bike rack?

Tow bar rack
Hi All,
cheers for all the input.
The tow bar option, does it attach to the rear chassis cross member then? I take it I would be drilling into this, yikes.
Look forward to hearing from you folks.
Mark.

My last Mk1 had a towbar attached like that, but I've seen bumpers with towbar attached, that'd be easier and not a permanent fixture.

Howdy there,
thanks for clearing that up. The temptation to get a van is increasing.
Take care all.

on the bodywork where the bike rack clips on my cars
