BHP vs Driveability

couple of questions:

How here has the most Bhp in they're Mk1?

anyone over the 250bhp mark, is it really undriveable for 'almost' day-to-day driving? and what modifications have you done to keep as much power on the black stuff as possible?

the reason I'm asking, is although I said I'd not put this turbo G60 engine in my Mk1 because it'll be fair too much power for the light shell, it's something a bit different and would rather keep my corrado standard so 'if' I ever had to sell one of my cars it would never be the Mk1

so basically debating if it'll be worth all the work and money by putting the engine in the Mk1  :dontknow: at the end of the day I still want to be able to drive the ol' girl in the wet!

christ 250bhp+ in a 800KG car  8O

My MK1 was rolling roaded at 152BHP. - Not a huge amount, but i havn't done an aweful lot. Would like to have the head polished & ported with new cams.

To be fair though 250BHP can't be that bad, you see G40/G60 turbo'd MK1 Polo's and if they can stay on the road a Golf should be able to.. :)

Mine is putting out 215bhp, it's a G60 with LSD and can be a handfull at times but is very driveable (not sure in the wet as it don't go out in the wet!), would be nice to have a bit more top end but I'm not complaining. I've driven a lupo with 340bhp and that was too much for a FWD car that size…spinning wheels at 80MPH!!! I personally would not bother going over the 250BHP mark as I think it would be wasted.

i once owned a 79 gti with 142bhp and that was quick enough, i think you get to certain level and you dont really need any more, what am i saying bring on the 250bhp

Ive got a G60 in mine and prob pushing the 200 bhp, i need to get it rolling roaded to be certian. its fine for everyday driving, a handful in the wet but other than that its fine. gives people in their jap rubbish a few surprises as well.

Got a standard rebuilt g60 so still quite tight, so should be 160 Bhp as standard….. 2007 i`m going to look at sprinting and would like to go to 200.

have driven 1.8 T Rallye at 280 Bhp, and did`nt enjoy it….

My g60 with has a rod change box mate, the ratios make them super quick to 60 but they top at out about 120. I think is plenty for uk roads. just make sure you have the box rebuilt and a bolt kit on the diff, or get an lsd from quaife. I had no end of probs to start with thought my box was good till i destroyed it, pulls like a train now though.

well IF (and that's a huge if!) I put the turbo lump in the Mk1 I could easily turn the boost right down for daily/wet drives

I'll have a better idea of what I'll do when I take the 1600 lump out

other things I need to consider is the shell was never designed for double the standard power so will have to add some weight to it with seam welds and strengthening bars here and there… oh and a full roll cage  8)

I've got all the G60 brake setup which will make it stop, polybushes all round will stiffen it up nicely

still love the original GTI though! think I'm back to square one again and I need 2 Mk1's

The problem with modified cars and competitive motorsport is that if you are new to it, you will run in a class full of seasoned competitors with bottomless pockets or lots of sponsorship  :banghead: . If you like losing then fine, but it's best to start small and work your way up.

I find that having big power in any light car is fine until you want to get somewhere in a hurry - that isn't on a straight road.

LSD's are fine but can make the steering weight up in strange ways.

I like the feel, poise and purity of a sorted MK1 in standardish trim, like mine for instance…
