I'm with GAMMYGOLFGTI on this one.
I'm 52 years young, was a teenager when the Golf came out - wasn't interested at all (had an Austin Healey Sprite but wanted a Morgan), got into MK1 Golfs after my 20-year old son bought one a couple of years ago…
Better late than never
What amazes me is how the yougsters (17-25) are so switched on to a model that went out of production before they were born :dontknow:
Have Fun

Perhaps an interesting poll to take would be who is as old as their Mk1..
2 1983 Campains (concours & track)
1985 Blue GTi Ragtop
2001 Bora Estate TDi SE (very very rare)
2000 Golf TDI commuter
2005 T5 Transporter with 394000 miles on it!

I think the results so far are a good indicator of the iconic status that the car has, it'd be interesting to compare the results to the mk2 escort following.
It's great that generation after generation appreciate the car and an excellent prospect for the Mk1 owners club moving forward. My car is older than I am, I barely remember the Mk1 that my dad had when I was a kid - Mars Red 1.6 as far as he remembers. He scrapped it at 105,000 miles cos he thought that was a bit much, The follies of youth eh!?

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

That's a good point - I'm 57 and I've had a Mk1 for nearly 22 years.
If I look back to when I was 20-25, there was no way that I'd have wanted a car from the mid 1940s. There was a classic/vintage car scene at that time but in general anything 20-25 years old couldn't have been used reliably to any real extent.
There was a time when I wondered what people thought of old men in Golf GTIs but I never really worried. On the other hand, there's a few cars I wouldn't want to be seen in……….
