Atlas Grey Campaign

Does anyone know if this is a true Campaign colour and if so is it the rarest colour?

To quote from the campaign checks guide….

Campaigns came in a limited variety of colours. These are Mars Red, Alpine White, Schwartz Black, Diamond Silver, Helios (Dark)Blue and Lhasa Green, the last three being metallic. A small minority of campaigns were available in Atlas Grey, normally considered a mk2 Golf colour.

Do you know of one?

There was one for sale a couple of weeks ago on the old ebay, but did not recognize the colour as being a MK1 colour. Must admit it looked spot on!

Yes that was the one, I'm trying to find out if it's still for sale, but if he pulled it it's prob sold. If anyone knows any different let me know. His reserve was ?3995, I thought it was a little optimistic but did not see it in the flesh. What do you guys think??

Still got the link

Looks really nice but the description is a little vague.  It would want to be top notch for 4k!  Be interesting to hear what became of it, would have been nice to see it at the chelmsford meets.

How can you expect to sell a Mk1 like that with such a rubbish ad on the auction???

Mind you I love these really bad auctions as you get stuff much much cheaper  :D

So what do you guys & Gals truely think this car is worth if its pretty mint…no MOT mind :?  I may have chance of buying it but could do with some examples of what MK1's have sold recently as the prices are all over the place. I personally think it's worth ?3k??
Pics of what has sold would be great :)

Atlas Grey is an official, UK-spec factory colour and is the rarest, I've no idea how many UK-supplied cars came with it but pretty sure its rarer than Helios Blue. With this in mind, I'd say it could add up to ?500 to the price of a 'regular' Campaign in top condition, which could be around ?2500.

If a car's in great condition but doesn't have an MoT, it seems suspicious. Either the seller doesn't want to sell (in which case, the price could be inflated too), or its less than mechanically perfect under the skin. I'd make MoT a condition of the sale, offering to pay the test fee for him pre-sale so he doesn't have to slash out. If it passes, then all well & good. If it passes with advisories, or fails, use this as a negotiating point. If the seller genuinely wants to sell but is simply too disorganised to MoT it, then use the lack of MoT as a negotiating point!

I guess its worth what someone is willing to pay for it at the end of the day…

At nearly ?4K though it seems well over the mint Campaign price. Also the lack of an MOT seems a bit odd for someone wanting top dollar for a car. If you are not worried about originality then you might be better off getting a salvageable Campaign in a less popular colour and having it restored and resprayed in Atlas grey - ?4K would go a long way towards getting that.

If you get a white, black or silver Campaign the interior would be correct for the Atlas grey as I am sure they had the grey stripe interior?

Atlas Grey is one of my favourite VW colours, and I think is one of those truly "timeless" metallic colours - isn't it still available on the latest Mk5 as a colour?

Check it over very carefully and be suspicious of any big gaps in the paperwork history - for the money he is asking it should be as near to concours as you can get. The colour is rare on a Campaign, but I don't think its more than a few hundred quid rare if you get my drift….

he's missing the top stripe isn't he?? Which could mean a respray, which is surely going to de-value the car considering he's selling it as a rare colour???

A respray, if done well, wouldn't necessarily devalue a car. If it were an outstandingly low mileage, original car, with very little wear or signs of the ravages of time, and it had a few paint imperfections, it would be potentially worth more without a respray. But if its generally worn, but had all the areas attended to (like respray, and other items) then it would be better to have had a recent one than not!

If you are referring to a mid-height silver stripe they were not fitted to later Mk1s like the Campaign.

Have you seen the car yet? Can't put a value on a car with just pictures, especially such poor ones.

i never knew that, so did some have the stripe and some didn't, or did it depend on colour? what about 83' non-campaign GTis', were they all meant to have stripes??

Correct myself - mid-height silver stripe only fitted to black and helios cars.

The one in the pic has silver lower stripes. I thought (very unsure now!!!) it was a general rule, that a car with silver lower stripes, has the black clip-on trim and a silver (stick on) stripe just below it. And that the ones with black lower stripes, didn't have the mid level stripe, because you can see the clip-on trim clearly.

Anyway, I thought the Atlas Grey GTI should have a black, not silver, lower stripe. Can anyone confirm?

Thats what i've just come on here to say paul!! had a brain wave a minute ago thinking if a GTi has silver stripes then should have the upper one!! Yeah i suppose it depends on whether or not its meant to have silver or black stripes, where's dubboy???
