Anyone running BBS RA's?

As above ……………………….and when you changed over from your standard wheels did you use the same wheel bolts? I have been led to believe that BBS RA's use a different bolt. True or false?

I don't want a  '3 wheels on my wagon' scenario!!

Cheers,

Jules

Not running them yet but have a set that are destined for my cabby. I'll form an orderly queue behind you and wait for a response from someone in the know

…can I join the queue too?!! Still not bought any RA's yet (plan to) but was wondering this myself!

Drew has them - plus plenty others so someone WILL know!

I'm pretty certain they are exactly the same on my sportline as they are on my other cars. Etka only shows one type of bolt as well. But without looking I'm only 99% sure!

they are longer wheelbolts as the body of the wheel (trying to sound posh, the bit that goes thru wheel (bout an inch thick)) is deeper.  try mk2 bolts they do the job! u can get proper bbs wheelbolts but i reckon mk2 ones seem to do the trick.  them sportline ones r pulling my winkler atm  8O  no 'rubbing' issues either, they sem to be getting a lot more expensive tho :(

I run both my Pirelli's and BBS RAs on mk2 bolts (oooo. another non standard edition!)

Never had a problem…

…well apart from one wheel nearly fell off last week, but I don't think that was the fault of the bolts!

13" & 15" RA's use the same standard length bolt. 14"s however need a longer bolt. I've had all 3 sizes on my G40.

I'm not the 'sharpest pencil……',  but this is a little confusing!
Standard what exactly. Are 'standard' MK1 bolts the same as 'standard' MK2 bolts? In fact how long are they, because I suppose you need to get at least half a dozen turns on the bolt before making them tight!!

My standard bolts were way too short for my 13" BBS.

So I bought some new ones which were way too long, went in to my brake drum, and stopped my car from rolling.

Which would have been ok if my jack hadn't chosen that moment to fail.

Damn.

Make sure you measure up real good.

For Mk1's, there are short bolts for steel rims, which have a plain (flat-topped) hex head, and then there are longer bolts for alloys, which have a castellated pattern on the head (like the battlements on a castle wall)

You can't use the long ones on drums with steel rims (fouls the brakes shoes, as Tallpete found…), and you can't use the short ones with alloys on any hub - danger of wheel loss! (You can use the long ones with steels on discs, as there is enough space for the excess length to stick out the back)

Confused? - The simplest solution is to get the right bolts for your rims, and keep them with those rims (rather than the car) if switching between steels and alloys.

The BBS RAs have a special bolt (according to Ekta), but it is the same length as the "regular" alloy-type ones, and only differs in the shape of the "cup" between the head and the threads - the part that sits against the wheel itself. however the difference is very small, and hard to see, even if you have both types to compare together…

Marvelous…………………….I think that you are right! :?

I think that VW alloys have a 'radius' seating as opposed to 'tapered'…………
but it is the length that concerns me! As you say….."danger of wheel loss"!!

Thanks

Jules.

As mentioned above, if you aren't sure, just count the number of turns from when the threads of the bolt first engage until the bolt goes tight - if it's less than about 6, then you've probably got bolts that are too short…
