Looks like we are all a bunch of 'numpties' then!
Anyone know the answer?!

Never had a problem…
…well apart from one wheel nearly fell off last week, but I don't think that was the fault of the bolts!
Cheers,
Drew.

13" & 15" RA's use the same standard length bolt. 14"s however need a longer bolt. I've had all 3 sizes on my G40.
I'm not the 'sharpest pencil……', but this is a little confusing!
Standard what exactly. Are 'standard' MK1 bolts the same as 'standard' MK2 bolts? In fact how long are they, because I suppose you need to get at least half a dozen turns on the bolt before making them tight!!

So I bought some new ones which were way too long, went in to my brake drum, and stopped my car from rolling.
Which would have been ok if my jack hadn't chosen that moment to fail.
Damn.
Make sure you measure up real good.

You can't use the long ones on drums with steel rims (fouls the brakes shoes, as Tallpete found…), and you can't use the short ones with alloys on any hub - danger of wheel loss! (You can use the long ones with steels on discs, as there is enough space for the excess length to stick out the back)
Confused? - The simplest solution is to get the right bolts for your rims, and keep them with those rims (rather than the car) if switching between steels and alloys.
The BBS RAs have a special bolt (according to Ekta), but it is the same length as the "regular" alloy-type ones, and only differs in the shape of the "cup" between the head and the threads - the part that sits against the wheel itself. however the difference is very small, and hard to see, even if you have both types to compare together…

I think that VW alloys have a 'radius' seating as opposed to 'tapered'…………
but it is the length that concerns me! As you say….."danger of wheel loss"!!
Thanks
Jules.
