Anyone owned a MK3 VR6?

Thinking of buying one as my mate has bought an R32 and I'm very jealous (and can't stretch to an R32! )

Just want something to drive about in at weekends until my MK1 is sorted, maybe auto as do too much driving in the week. Anyone owned a VR6 got any tips etc?

Kind of thinking if it ends up a dog I've a VR6 ready to drop in a MK1 at a later date

Cheers
Andy

Ive only owned a 2.0 GTi but i can honestly say that ive driven a Spinter luton van that handles better than a MK3.

Its like driving a blamonge

But as for the VR6 in your MK1 its a good plan as i think stripping its the kindest thing to do to a MK3.

Have you looked at the mk4 V6 4 motion, Going to be more then a VR6 but closer to an R32?

I've got a mate with a VR6 and the engine is great it the handling that is not so good.

i had one that i used to show and i really do have a soft spot for mk3's the noise really sells it for me and mine was super reliable to drive up and down the motorway, you can pick them up mega cheap now aswell, good if you can pick yourself up a highline model.

not that its in the same league, but my mk3 estate that i had didnt handle to bad, well rolled about a bit, but stiffer springs soon sorted that!!

But I'd consider the VR6 - like you say, the engine coudl go elsewhere!!

We have a MK3 GTi (for me to get to work in) its not the best
car in the word, granted, but it does the job, and I was thinking
of getting the V6 next, im sure with a change of springs / shocks
they would be a great car, let me know what its like if you try one

Had a highline one years ago, good torquey engine until the timing chain snapped while in third gear  . Only downside was fuel consumption and with petrol prices on the up again a TDi seems a better option

Have one on the drive now. Really low, sounds amazing, leaves others at the lights, would love the engine in the cab :o)

they are a good car…i have had mine for 4 years now and i remember being un-impressed with it performance wise when i got it….but the sound is the best thing a nice 6 branch with good system and decat will release a few more ponies…along with nice induction kit for the noise.

the best thing to do to them is charge or turbo…mine is charged and is a totally different car now but i only use it every so often….

you can get them dirt cheap now so alot of car and grunt for the moola.

Thanks for the feedback chaps. Not so worried about the handling being a bit soggy - found that with a MK4 GTI but can be sorted. MK3's seem so cheap at the moment for what you're getting.

Anyone tried an auto? Does performance suffer much? Just fancy some lazy weekend driving 8)

The two blokes I know that drive VR's had recently gave off about VR having auto box,

And said why have an autobox when the car should to be driven proper!

Been coming to that conclusion my self! Do so many miles for work, a rest at weekend would be nice, but I'm not buying a VR6 to pootle to the shops in, so think it will be a manual! 8)
