Another one fails!

The GTI failed its MOT last week :( . Failed on corrosion on rear chassis leg - not much but to near the axle mounting. Everything else was spot-on though and apart from some welding to the sill I only had to fit a new horn as my pre-mot work.

Been to busy working to sort it out for re-test and have had to decalre it SORN as tax just run out. Off on holiday soon so will have to wait a couple of weeks before work can start  . What's more its all a bit to near the fuel tank e.t.c for me to feel comfortable welding. So I'm going to gave to drop the axle, back box, tank, filler/breather pipes and fuel pump - which should be fun.

Actually looking forward to it all bar undoing the nuts on the axle/chassis studs which hopefully won't shear  . Decided may as well crack on with sorting out O/S rear inner arch and spare tyre-well while cars stripped down. Also will paint rear axle, re-furb rear brakes… maybe some new bushes… Hopefully, get it back together in time for Gaydon.

Cheers

Good luck mate :D

Ii know what you mean………. mechanics can be enjoyable it's just those god darn seized bolts and dirt that spoils the fun!

Hope to see you at Gaydon

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

D'OH!

be a good time/chance to get some WD40 sprayed up on all the nuts and bolts you'll be removing so it can soak in while your on holiday!

Hope it all goes smoothly for ya!

Cheers kins, it will be ready for Gaydon :borg: . Couple hundred miles in my four speed 1093cc Golf C wouldn't be fun.

Wire brush all the rust that you canoff the studs. I'd get a 17mm nut (or what ever size it is), cut some slots in it and use it to re-cut the threads by carefully winding in on backwards and forwards with lots of oil, before you undo the the 4 nuts. Good Luck

Cheers, thats a good idea. Laid the car up on Saturday and gave all four nuts a solid soaking of WD40, which I can leave to penetrate for the next week or two - then careful does it  8O

By the way has anyone used nut-splitters in general or specifically to remove nuts from axles mounts? Are they effective, heard they can crush rather than split making harder to remove nuts?

Cheers

You can use a Dremel and carbide disc to cut the nut if you have problems.
