Am I asking too much.....?

I've been advertising my mk1 GTI on a couple of sites for the past month or so with a few enquiries but little in the way of firm responses.

It's a '83, Lhasa, 100k, 3 previous owners, no sunroof, standard spec. Mechanically its very good and its had a recent cambelt and waterpump. There's no rust structurally and no repairs structurally either.

The body is tidy, but there is rust on the o/s front wing-it's rusted away behind the front lower edge of the arch cover, the rear n/s arch lip is rusty and needs attention, the o/s one has a bit of rust but isn't as bad, and the lower rear corners need attention. It's had a lower half respray (up to half way up the pillars inc. bonnet and tailgate) at some time which looks fine from 10 feet away but isn't perfect. There has also been a pattern n/s wing fitted, the previous owner told me this was due to a parking bump.

The interior is good, I've had the drivers bolster retrimmed as it was slightly worn and I wanted it fixed before the foam got damaged.

I bought it as a track day project, however once I got it out onto the open road (I bought it from central London, not really anywhere to test it fully!) I realised it was too good and original to use for this.

I've been trying to get between 1600-1700, is this putting people off or is it the honest description? I've enquired about sorting the body work, as I can do everything execpt the paint I reckon I can get it sorted properly for around ?700 so is it worth doing this?

Hope your not offended,  but a "slightly" tatty Mk1 GTI as you describe with tax and test is worth about ?1000-?1200 tops . I paid a ?1000 for mine it was slightly tatty gave me a 2 years motoring [2nd year just] and now i am rebuilding it .

Drop the asking price ? Have the work carried out if you are going to keep it .

I agree - possibly a little too much if it looks a bit tatty.
The rusty arches may be putting a lot of people off… If you were to fix it and have it looking perfect again, it would probably go for ?2 - ?2.5K…

may be worth trying the dredded evil-bay as you may get a higher than average price if you're lucky?

People often get carried away with e-bay, perticulalry if you write an honest description, and really sell the vehicle you'll be surprised what you might get.

What's your reason for selling it??

I've also got a scirocco storm which I don't mind modifying and using as a track car. I can't drive both  :(

The car doen't really look that tatty, the problem is that I've looked at ones in the past for similar money which have possibly been better cosmetically but not as good structurally. As the original plan was for something for trackdays getting a car that was structurally sound was more important.

At this rate is going to be a toss up between a nice propper paint job or a localised tart up and a set of koni T/A's  :D

I've seen that picture recently!?!?

From that, it looks nice, and worth the money you are asking.
Have you tried Flea Bay? it's worth a shot but put in a tidy reserve!

I could, but I really don't want the hassle of somebody winning the auction and deciding they don't want the car because it "isn't good enough". I've already had that, the guy had all the details, verbally, in email and pictures, agreed a price sent a deposit, drove a long way to look at it and decided that because the paint wasn't perfect he didn't want it.  :banghead:  I gave him his deposit back, although I'd taken time off work to get the car ready and told 2 further enquiries that the car was sold. One of these has since got a car, I've had no reply from the other.

I think I'll just put a for sale sign on iy at shows this summer.

Ouch - mistake number one!

If you gave him an honest description and he was willing to stump up a deposit, you should have kept it for your trouble and loss of earnings for that day!

Have you tried all the other forums:
www.Edition38.com
www.DemonVW.com
www.ClubGti.com (co.uk?)

Also, have you advertised in the magazines? PVW and TheGolf+ I believe are both free to do so…

I can't believe you haven't sold it - there are always loads of people on the look out for solid Mk1's!

I know, I just didn't want the hassle of somebody slagging the car off on any of the forums, would probably make it even more difficult to sell  :banghead:
