5th gear votes the new Golf GTI as car of the year

Car of the year is the new Golf GTI mk5,will this stimulate more interest in the original Mk1 Golf GTI and so make the value of our cars rise?

I am still recovering from the fact that it beat one of the few new cars worth having…the DB9. I want one so bad..

It may make the values of Mk1s rise, but only standard ones IMO

Also if you saw Men and motors they had a top 100 most popular/best cars ever and the golf (all marks) came 6th, not bad really.
In case you wanted to know the impreza turbo came 15th  8) beeting the evo which was 20th

You're right 3piece, but from my observations only it seems the non-standard  Golfs that fetch the high money are the ones that have spent thousands spent on engines, ICE etc etc. It's the more lowly 'been messed about with' MK1's that don't seem as desirable as a standard MK1 and therefore don't seem to make the money.

golf mk1

hello hairy you are also right but that same rule is also true of a standard golf a good one will always command more , but most of the really good ones have had loads of money spent on them at some stage to get them like they are my point was that a standard golfs valuewill not go up any more than non standard  maybe i am getting the wrong vibes but from what i have read on site there seems to be a bit of a taboo towards modified cars  i have both  and it states vw mk1 owners club

3piece, I said "rise" not necessarily worth more. For sure some top modified cars are worth more than some standard ones. But I have never seen a modded one go for the 10k that I saw an original one go for.

Funny how the standard cars are sold before you know it, but the same modded ones are often seen on Ebay time and time again?

I suggest you read the section "About…" "Press Cuttings" where the motivation behind the club is described by Drew.

Personally I have one of the most modified cars on the scene and have no axe to grind about them. The comments made so far are based on fact and experience of some very knowledgable members.

The purpose of this forum is to hold lively, civilised discussion about both standard and modified cars.

have read : form a club dedicated towards the standardisation of mk1 golf rather than modified

3piece,

Yes we are a club dedicated towards standard cars but that does not preclude modified ones.  What the club is not about is supporting a strong modified scene as thare are other organisations that cover that comprehensively.  What there wasn't was a club to support the standardised scene - and we are now just that.

We welcome standard cars as well as modified ones (dubboy's modded Mk1 is very nice).  We also encorage healthy debate.

No, not unhealthy!! It's yours/our opinions at the end of the day.

As already pointed out we are bias towards the standard scene but like Rajan who has standard and heavily modified, you are more than welcome.

I think what's trying to be pointed out is that someone only interested in heavily modified wont get as much out of this site as they may from others.

Out of interest, check out the link below of pics from our Gaydon meet. You'll see high majority of standard cars but also some highly modded ones like Rajans

Would be interested to see pics of (Both!) your golfs! Feel free to post

Should be easy? (I say that as not done it yet myself! )

Go to the 'Photos and Images' section of the Tools menu on the left of your screen. Click on the 'Owners Cars' category. At top menu of next page select 'Upload picture' and then click on the 'browse' button to look on your hard drive for the pic. Enter description etc if you want one and then click up load.

On this new forum (unlike the old one) it can host the pics for you so you don't have to have them on the net elsewhere and supply web link.

Hope that all makes sense
Cheers
Hairy one!

Speaking about the mk 5 i drove it last week at knockhill and loved it, i like the way it has the tartan seats and the silver dash surrounds like the original mk 1. I tried my hardest to tail the thing out round the corners but it just wouldn't move. Some might say this spoils the fun in driving but from a safety point of view it is great!!!!
Only wish i could afford the ?20,000 for one and it would have to be dsg

Have you checked the size of the file you are trying to upload, as there is a size limit :!:
