28th birhday present and running-in question....plus pics.

The yellow S1 celebrated its 28th today. Registered on the 21.3.79. Its hard to believe some of our mk1's are really this old.  As an early present, it had an engine rebuild last month. I did have ideas of fitting a larger engine. But decided to keep the original and have it rebuilt, keeping the car completely original.
New rings, valve guides and seals, new belts, cleaned and skimmed head, big end bearings, new clutch, oil etc.

It now runs real smooth and quiet. Have done just over two hundred miles sticking below 40. Any suggestions on how many miles it should be run in for ?  Being a 1.1 we don't have the luxury of  a rev. counter so have to rely on speeds.  Heres a few recent pics.  Dave.

My S1 1.1 that I sold last year was absolutely fine…….it was fairly spritely infact!!. Wasn't ideal for long journey's, but would quite happily sit at 70 with no issues. Wish I never got rid of it!!

Thanks for your comments on my mk1.  I've heard before somewhere that a mk1 is'nt fully run-in till 100,000 miles. so thats going to take me years    Like Craig says, the 1.1 is quite spritely till about 60, then runs out of breath. Long journeys on the motorway can be a bit boring - we usually sit at around 50 - 60.  Driving the Golf after my 2Ltr Focus always makes me feel good. Catch myself looking in shop windows at the golfs reflection as I drive past  :D  anyone else do that ?  Winning at Gaydon was a real surprise - there were so many nice motors there. still can't believe it !  Will get a couple of photos of the engine for you Marsred. Trouble is, when the car was new, it was Zibart rustproofed and they coated the engine bay with black wax type paint. It really does'nt look that good    But I'll do a couple for you. Thanks again.  Dave.

Nice car man…

I think the running in a engine I usually go with 1000 miles at limited speed - taking is nice and easy in each gear, but with a small engine, I think 500-1000 should be ok. Me being old skool, once my engine is rebuilt (hopefully by this weekend) I will be running it in over 2500 miles so its nice and bed in  :D before I start giving it any real right foot work?!!!

That's a very nice car.

I'm so glad you decided to keep it original.

Do you take it shows? If you do I look forward to seeing it this summer
