There has to be more than that :dontknow: . Do you mean just GTi's?

Nope, sorry, didn't understand a word of that! For example why on earth would the DVLA be asking for information from you?

Its not registered and they want to know exactly what it is before they issue a number for it  :dontknow:

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

am on about series1 gti's in right hand drive yes, thought i read somewhere there was only 26 left registered? or is that bull? , this one i have is apparently not registered, not sure, theres no V5 or plates wi it , just a vin number, and without a reg number dvla are on about re-registering, to do so i have to come up wi some documented evidence of the cars age (n model i think) before they will cough up a new number, shame cos if i could trace back n find out its reg no then i could apply for the V5 , awful state the country has come to wi its obsession for paperwork.

The obsession for paperwork is driven by the obsession to reduce vehicle-related crime. I am personally amazed its never been registered, does this mean its done 0 miles and is it as-new condition too? Or that simply, the car's reg plates have been removed? If so, why? Why is the V5 missing? Why can't the previous owner supply it? Why can't be reapply for it if he owned the car before? Why doesn't he know the registration number?

Sorry for all the questions but I hate to be the one to point it out, you might have just bought a stolen car there.

The VIN number proves the age of the car, there's no worries if the car's legit but you have to reregister it. They might want a letter from VW but I'd imagine that would be pretty simple to produce, since the chassis number so clearly defines the age.

27 series 1 GTIs? I'd think there's more than that, but its just speculation unless someone did an enquiry to DVLA etc.

full story is , it was put into a custom body shop in dorset n the boy who put it in never paid his bill n it was sold to offset the bill, ive been trying to get in touch with the bodyshop again to see if i can get a name n address of who had it before, but wi no luck at the moment. It was arrested in lew of payment etc in the proper way n everything is above board, dunno where the 26 came from n it could well be bull , somebody may know for sure

Unless you have documentation from the owner who put the car into the bodyshop you have a stolen car.

dont think so

Why not? As you said you have not been able to contact the owner who could just ring the police. So what documentation do you have?

Me neither - Don't quote me on this but I think there's a strange little exemption in law, which allows a garage to take ownership of a car it works on, if the bill isn't paid.

yes, its what happens , its an old fashioned concept called paying your bills, if you dont the garage keeps the car , after so many days its legally thiers, how it goes

Surely the garage would have to take the owner to court for non payment? Taking the car as payment sounds like theft to me.

Same sort of thing with recovery companys!

They collect your car then charge ?25 a day storage. You pay or there in there rights to sell your car to recover payment.

Brought a cabby in the above situation.

yep , tough old world, same rules still apply if the bill is artificially high and it really isnt fair in sense that greedy garages can overcharge. However the garage i bought it off made a massive loss, only recovering ?500

UK law states the lien does not entitle the garage to sell the vehicle. The garage merely has a legal right to keep it until payment is made - see
http://www.gillhams.com/dictionary/19.cfm

No lawful posession (receipt/V5, court instruction etc) means owner could claim stolen car. I certainly would not spend a heap of money on a car I had no documentation for, as potentially you could lose the lot.
