17" tyre sizes

Hi

I am about to have my alloys restored on my mk 1 golf. They are 17" and currently haave tyres 205 40 17r on them but I want to stretch on some smaller tyres on the fronts when they are done but dont know what smaller sizes can go on a 17" wheel.
Does anyone have smaller tyres on a 17" and what sizes are they? :dontknow:
