Where is it advertised, just out of interest? PM me the info if you like, I may have seen it before that's all (some keep coming up again and again). Is it a 5 speed? I must admit the precious few that are left have often been workhorses and had a rough time, but nevertheless even with high mileage they can be as reliable as ever. In fact if it has been used regularly for longer journeys (racking up a lot of miles) it will run all the better for it. Better than a low milage one that's only been used to tootle to the shops and back every day.
My last mk1 diesel had been stood for at least a year outside at a farm, been driven wildly over bumpy fields by a 15year old beforehand and still turned into a great daily driver for me with a bit of tlc, the main problem is making the bodywork last as long as the engine! It was a bit noisy, as you'd expect, I think holes had been drilled in the airbox which didn't help, but pulled like a train doing 65mpg on open roads and started well in all weathers. The 'cold start' lever on the dash should only ever really be needed on frosty mornings for the initial start-up, then can be pushed back in before you even set off.
I'd hope the one you see will start up first touch, not smoke much at all after the initial start-up (both my diesels have barely smoked at all), and pull well in all gears from the bottom end and be nicely responsive at the top end. My current diesel is pretty quiet once it's warmish, as quiet as modern diesels, it only takes a few minutes to warm up and then stays in the middle of the temp guage for the whole journey.
I highly recommend the 5 speed gearbox with the 'economy' fifth gear. It's a proper gear (not like ones that are barely different to 4th) and of course it makes getting 65mpg easy and high-speed driving a pleasure.
Good luck, let us know how you get on
P.S - Bert is the expert - he's just being a bit brief!
