I just do mine myself - prices charged by platers seems to have gone mad in the last for years…

Sorry - not in the North London area though.

How much welding do you need doing?

If you have somewhere to work on the car and the time I'd recommend learning yourself. For the price many places seem to charge for quite minor welding jobs you could probably buy yourself an OK mig welder and teach yourself pretty quickly.

I have seen some pretty bad plating jobs when looking for cars - many places will just slap a plate on the affected area and plaster it in underseal - not pretty.

I took an evening course at a tech college in NE London which was really good and not expensive. Its given me a really good foundation in not only MIG welding, but gas as well. As soon as finances permit I'm going to invest in a MIG setup.

Once you can weld, I think most car resto projects should hold no fear. If only I could get the hang of decent spraying I would be completely self sufficient on the restoration side of things  :D .

How much work does your car need doing?

like the idea of learning to do it myself…will look around at local colleges and see what there is.

i don't think there is too much to do on her really..(i hope).. just noticed the other day that the footwell behind the passenger seat was sopping. pulled up the carpet and have found a hole on the floor under the seat that opens into an area below that, which is where the water is collecting. car hasn't really been anywhere so i reckon the water has got in somewhere from above, just need to get all the carpet out and get a hose pipe to it and see where it's running from. hopefully it hasn't been a long term problem,  but if it has then i'm expecting some rust in the floor pan somewhere…hence potential welding.
the way things are going i think i'm gonna need to rent a garage somewhere and get to work on her… it'll take all year if i can only get out there when the weather is ok.

If looking for courses on welding check out the Walthamstow College 10 week basic welding evening course. Right next to Blackhorse Rd. tube.

The lecturer who ran it was very good and I learnt heaps, plus its very hands on so nearly all of that time is spent actually welding. Small course limited to only 10 people so lots of one to one help available.

They also have full workshops and Pro spraybooth there with air fed gear which students can use. I'm hoping to sign up for the car resto course there next year if I can, although it gets booked up really quickly.

Cheers,
