Engine Rebuild in Birmingham area

I've just got my hands on a 1983 Golf GTi Cabrio for a steal… all seems reasonably good but having driven it now for a few weeks it appears to puff smoke on start up… and when I put my foot down…
I was thinking of taking the engine out this winter and have it rebuilt with new bearings, rings, valve guides etc etc….
Can anyone help or recommend a good contact for rebuilds in my area ish… I don't want to pay a fortune for a race engine etc, as I want to keep it standard……
Google can't help me….. I want recommendations!!!!
