Engine conversion in the hampshire/dorset/wiltshire area

It absolutely will have been covered countless times before but I am sooo no good at searching forums. I have put my golf cab up for sale as I just can not drive it anymore. The lack of power steering is causing me some serious pain in the neck (well lower shoulder area actually).I am also slightly spoiled with my past vehicle ownership the last of which was 600 BHP. Now one solution that presents itself is an engine conversion complete with hubs, drive shafts, front end suspension the lot?????
I need a drive in drive out service as I just don't have the time or inclination to do this job.
I can and will sell up the golf and go back to my japs if I don't find a solution but I guess I could sink £5k into a solution to keep this car. I kind of like it. It's got heritage that a supra will never have. It's cute and gets as many looks as my Do-Luck aristo ever got. Even with a 1.8T lump it'd do 30mpg that no 2JZ will ever do. Most importantly for a 1988 car it's pretty immaculate. It is by far the best condition car I have ever had and I look after my cars. The 2004 BMW I sold recently was no where near the condition of this cab.
So basically I would like to know what my options are on an engine conversion that will also stick me on power steering and bigger front brake setup etc without having to do it myself?

Why don't you give TSR Performance in Somerset a ring they do that kind of thing.

Hmmm Starting from £4750 to fit a £450 ish engine? What am I missing here? Do they fully recon the engines? Seems like a hell of a lot of money to drop in an un-warranted second hand engine with 150 bhp

You'd have to do a lot more research in to what you'd get for that money but I guess -and it is a guess- that that's the cost of a 'drive in, drive out' service. I know that TSR have been around for a long time and were, not too long ago, taken over by different management. They used to have a very good rep and were used by a lot of people at one time, not sure about these day's. TSR is the only one I have heard of in that area though.

Yeah I think you've hit the nail on the head there fella. If you want the ass ache of having a car off the road for years, and having to whittle parts to fit yourself over hundreds of manhours you can do the job probably for a grand but if you want to drive the car in and then come back and get it completed you'd better have deep pockets.

The responses I've had so far are quite encouraging. They will do a diesel conversion for me with a modern engine for around the £5k marker. I'm more inclined to go with a diesel as I know that no matter what job I end up in and where I can afford to run the motor as a daily long distance commuter should I need to.

Sooooo what diesel lumps would be good to drop in the Mk1 golf then? Do you stick with VW/audi group lumps?

Now getting really wacky has anyone ever bothered to go RWD on a MK1 golf conversion? Crazy thoughts such as sticking a 944 gearbox in the back to shift some weight over the rear enter my head. Pipe-dreams and wishful thinking that is but I bet a RWD golf would be an absolute hoot and a half to drive.

So I have found the first product I want to use in Lieu of clocks so that side of things I don't need.

The more I look at this the more I am determined to do "something" with my golf. I spent years in various Jap motors but always bought pre-modified. I never had anything done myself.
I had my last aristo LPG'd which if I went for a petrol conversion is definitely an option. Do the 1.8T lumps take LPG conversion well?
