Bodywork garage in East mids needed + advice on price etc

Post

Evening all,

I'm aware of another thread on this similar topic but I'm not a fan of highjacking threads on forums.
I have a tintop '83 gti that is in need of some new panels and welding
I'm looking for a garage in the Leicester area, however I'm not afraid to travel to find the right place
below is a list of work that is needed:

New sills – both side
New outer wings – both sides
New front valance
Small bit of plating at the back of rear passenger footwell
Bottom of doors need plating

If anyone could recommend a garage it'll be much appreciated, likewise if anyone has had this sort of work done before
and can advise of rough price.

Cheers
Cav

Don't know of anyone in your area, someone might chime in soon though. One thing I would say is that it would probably be cheaper to buy some used doors that are in better condition than yours, than to pay someone to repair them -depending on how bad they are, of course- I managed to find a rot/rust free door for £50, I was quoted at least 4 hours to repair it At £25 per hour, so saved £50.

Just a thought mate. :thumbs:Andy.

Good advice from Andy. As said find some rot free panels to save some £££ mate.

Shop about as well as there's quite a few places out there who will be able to do this sort of work for you. Sure someone from the local area on here can help you out :)

Advice taken on the doors, good idea!

It's the garage that is really becoming the issue, 2 not interested/didn't reply, one place wanted 1k for sills only and another booked up til past xmas! that's all the local places covered.

Hoping someone can recommend somewhere!

A grand for sills :o  That's a shocker!

Is this work to get you through an M.O.T?

I'd be inclined to book in  at the garage that's fully booked till after Christmas, as that seems like the place to go. Could you not bodge it till then? I personally hate bodging but if it's only temporary…..

It wasn't for an MOT. It started off as a fuel pump failure, upon changing the fuel pump I found a hole in the rear passenger foot well and decided to get the lot done.

This is now irrelevant however :(Yomp very kindly came to have a look at the car and looks like I've bought a bit of a stinker. Shes had a lot of poor bodywork done to her and incorrect replacement panels used.
Its looking more like the start of a resto job, using her as the donor.

He also linked me to your restoration thread, great work!

Yomp is your man, he know's his stuff!! If your car is as far gone as mine was, you're looking at hundreds of hours to put right, not cheap!!

Probably better off using her as a donor, like you say, Otherwise you could try and restore her yourself if you have time

Hope you find an answer soon mate
