Wont start, HELP!!!

HI all,
I have a 1800 8v gti cabrio 1989.
Last week i changed the distributor cap, rotor arm and ht leads (all with genuine parts). At first it ran very rough as if on two or three cylinders, then an almighty bang from beneath the bonnet. It will now turn over but wont start, it wont even try to start. I am sure the order of spark is good (althought could someone confirm what lead from cap to what plug). The fuel pump is buzzing okay.
All this because whilst changing my gear linkage i lent on the old cap and snapped off an ht lead.
Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you've got the firing order mixed up. The norm is 1,3,4 & 2. Do you know how to check for TDC on number 1 cylinder?

It sounds as if you are right. How do i find firing order and how do i set it. I must of mixed them up when i removed the old cap.

ok, can you remove number 1 spark plug (one nearest timing cover). Now poke a long thin screwdriver or similar into the plug hole. Turn the engine over manually (big socket on crank bolt) until No 1 piston comes up to the top. Remove your dist cap and see where the rotor is pointing to, this should be number 1 on your cap. Look down at the crank and the timing marks should be aligning also, if not, your 180 degrees out and need to rotate another full 180. When everythings lined up you can refit your plug leads. Let us know how you get on. The firing order is 1,3,4 & 2

Thanks.
I think that all looks good. I have removed an injector and i dont seem to be getting fuel in. Maybe load bang has blow things. I can hear buzz of fuel pump thou. Is there a fuse or relay to check?

Is the spark leads now on in the correct order? If you can hear fuel pump then relay ok. I take it your spinning the engine over to see the fuel??

Yes, i disconnected a fuel line before injector at fuel distributor and turned car over. No fuel overflow. I still hear buzz of fuel pump few seconds after i stop turning engine over.
I can only think this is connected somehow to loud bang i heard from under bonnet. I will check for a spark tomorrow although i am concerned that i have no fuel, I will also remove fuel pipe just before filter under bonnet tomorrow and check for supply.
Thanks for help and will keep you updated (all this cus i cracked a bloody ht lead working on something else).
