whats the this!!!!

Right i have removed my fuel pump to replace the pipes brake and fuel.. and cooper seal.. was wondering what is the round cylinder shape thing at the back near the fuel tank.. behind the fuel pump looks like a filter etc..

do i need it?

Its an accumulator, and yes you need it. It smoothes out the pressure delivered from the pump.
