What are these and they connect where?

Hi,
Sorry for long post.

Had loads of running probs- kangaroos when accelerator is floored and so on.

Decided to follow the guide thats on here for cleaning the fuel pump filter and tank filter.

Got a dead weird setup, things on my car (1992 Sportline) don't match the parts on the pics in the guide. There was something totally disconnected and something I have no idea what it is. Take a look and see if you can help me out

I think this is the accumalator. It was totally disconnected.

There are 2 connectors, where should the large pipe connect to. And where should the the smaller pipe connect to?

Secondly this was all connected up and I have no idea what it is

It feels like its just a hollow plastic box. Cant see anything inside it.
Anybody know what it is, if so should it be there and how should it be connected?

Also can someone correct me if I'm wrong with my thinking - pump lifter in top of fuel tank, from here fuel goes to fuel pump( round bottom of tank), then fuel goes to the accumalator, then it connects to under floor pipes and goes to the fuel filter in the bay.
Also a pipe brings excess fuel back to the tank and this connects directly to the return connector on the lifter pump.

Have I missed something out or am I correct.

Thanks for ANY help,

Andy

item 1 is the accumulator, item 2 is a fuel reservoir to help prevent fuel starvation issues :)

is your car a k-jet or digifant model, following on from my post in your other thread?

have a look at your airbox, if it has 6 fuel lines coming off it to your fuel injectors, a metal thing on the front of the block (WUR) and another metal thing on the side of the inlet (5th injector) its a k-jet model.

kinda like this, its a MK2 16v model but you can see the metering head on the front with fuel line attachments :)

If your airbox is plain ands has a metal thingy with an electrical plug on the side its digi. like this, again its a mk2 but you get the idea

Thanks for the pics, I have looked and mine is not a DIGI, it looks very similar to the top pic.

Where about does the fuel reservoir, connect in the system, is there somewhere I can look at what pipe goes where on the reservoir?

aha i think we have got to the bottom of your problems! k-jet systems MUST be run using the correct high pressure pump, digi spec pumps just cannot supply enough fuel.

heres a nice big pic showing the correct fuel system layout for a late cab running k-jet:

as you can see, its lift pump -> reservoir -> fuel pump -> accumulator -> filter -> metering head -> reservoir -> tank return

The resivour is still available from VW and is ?14. I got one last week. You'll also need to get the correct accumulator and pump though as the ones you've got are incorrect. That additional thick rubber pipe you've got going to the engine bay in the picture on your other thread want's ditching aswell mate.

I know it's not want you want to hear but i've just cleaned out all my system and replaced the resivour and fuel filter and i've still got the same problem as your describing.

Thanks for all the info. Very useful. javascript:emoticon(':D')

Your answers lead to further questions.

On the accumalator which connector( large or small)  connects to the fuel pump

And secondly does anyone know what pipes connect where on the reservoir. There four connectors and there are only 3 pipes to play with( line from lift pump, line to fuel pump and a return pipe)

Thanks for ALL help so far.

MK1Junkie - have you been following my thread on my running probs. What other steps have you took to remedy your fault.

thanks

single connection on back -> fuel pump inlet

on the other side:
one right on top -> not sure, I think this is return to tank
middle one -> return from metering head
bottom one -> not sure, i think this is outlet from lift pump

basing the top & bottom pipes on how the MK2 reservoir works, the output from lift pump goes to bottom and the return is on the top. someone who owns a cab/rocco hopefully can confirm. :)

Does the tank happen to have any arrows on?
