WaaaaaWrrrrrrWaaaaaWrrrrrr A surging Driver

Aaaarrrrgghh, my Mk 1 Golf Driver 1300 is my favourite transport of all time but at the moment it is driving me mad. The car seemed to take ages to warm up neccesitating use of the choke for much longer than usual. Not helped of course by lower temperatures and the lack of working temp gauge. Edventually it just kept stalling - feeling like a lack of fuel so I carefully stripped down the carb, cleaned it, assembled it, still the car seems to need more choke, changed the dizzy cap and rotor -better, starts well again but still is a nightmare to set up the carb. I don't want to deviate too much from the basic carb settings that correct me if I am wrong are 1 and a half to 1 and 3/4 turns out on the small mixture screw and 2 -3 turns out of the larger volume screw. Does this volume screw control the amount of air coming into the carb or the mixture of both as a whole? Does this sound about right to you guys and gals of course out there? Otherwise could an air leak cause such erratic tickover? Motor seems to surge but I cannot deduce why. Please help as I am getting bored of late night inner city forays out when the traffic is not so dense and the pedal dancing to prevent stalling. The stress! I will check the plugs to see if they are coke like after last nights run but beyond that am running out of ideas…. Any suggestions gratefully recieved. Thanks

Could deffinately be an air leak.

have you had the carb off recently? Did you inspect the rubber mounting gasket? These are prone to splitting, meaning the engine can suck in air, which is not having fuel added via the carb, causing poor idle.

Sound similar to a problem I had with my old clipper.

I had a problem with the carb icing up due to the flap in the air intake sticking open. To cure it in the short term I jammed the flap shut so it took air from the top of the manifold until I could get it fixed properly.

If you think you've got a air leak spray wd40 or brake cleaner round the area you think the leak is if it revs up you've found were the leak is! :)
