Nice one. Been having a lot of trouble with my car, and it's oftern the simple things like that are over looked!

yep, 95 shouldnt cause to many problems for a short period, but id always recommend higher octane where possible. i certainly never use less than 97 ron in any of my vehicles. i even run super diesel in my van, not that it makes much odds in a 3T van!

is it a gti?

if so it was designed to be run on higher octane (4star) fuel and so should really be run on higher octane fuel now.

higher octane reduces the risk of engine knock/pre detonation/pinking.

Fuel octane ratings explanation and compared.

hi
yes its a 1.8gti tintop
thanks for the link
so did 4star leaded have a 97-98 octane
or am i missing the point
cheers
baz

car sounds & goes great on the 95 , but maybe i am causing long term damage  :?

4star will have had a higher octane rating than standard unleaded i believe yes.

i ran my mk2 1.8 on 95 ron until i started tuning it, then i switched straight onto 98ron.  i have a mate who has only ever run his g60 on 95 ron, hasnt caused any damage but after a little while on 98 he agrees its made a nice difference.

googled leaded petrol octane & yes it is the same octane as super-unleaded

so maybe i should start using super-unleaded - but even the MPG on my mk1 is excellant on the 95
but if it is causing long-term damage i will be def be changing
cheers

the higher octane should also see better MPG :)

Your mates g60 would have been fine with no damage as it has a knock sensor which detects low octane fuel and retards the ignition till the nock is gone!!

On 95 he was prob down 15-20 horses!!! No wonder he agrees it's better on 98!!!

My formel e has a sticker behind the door saying 98 only!!! and it's only a 1.1.

Yep, the C formel E engine was a high compression 1.1, so it needs 98RON petrol.
