trouble at full throttle when warm

hey all, was just after some advice.

i have a 1.8 carb cabrio and have only just put it on the road. driving locally it gives me no problems, took it to a show at the weekend and along the dual carriageway at full throttle it stutters and if yuou dip the clutch cuts out. I restarted it and feathered the throttle back up top speed and it runs fine until under load i.e up hill or flat out  :banghead:

any ideas? im not familiar with carbs tbh and i have fitted a k&n bolt on air filter instead of the airbox. I have been told about carb icing but does this normally happen cold? its had a new in line fuel filter but it never fills up could this be the problem?

any help much appreciated

cheers
Dale

yep sounds like carb icing, it doesnt have to be that cold out but the more moisture in the air the worse it will be. buy a proper airbox then have a read:

damn i bloody love the look of the filter aswell :(

will stick the ugly airbox back on and see how she goes

tried the old airbox with no difference :(

its like its not getting enough fuel at WOT because it will run for days and days cruising but if i have to put my toe down it cant cope :(

any other suggestions? since replaced fuel pump and it has already had new plugs, leads, cap and rotor arm so i believe its fuel related.

is there any adjustment on the carb to let more fuel in? just think IMO its not getting the fuel it needs

cheers

If its a Weber Carb then you need to block off the return line as the fuel will by-pass the carb, just had the same problem with a small block car so i assume its the same.

its a pierburg mate with that vapour seperator returning fuel to the tank, same sort of thing???

I think they need the return line TBH although I'mno expert, just relaying the problem I had with my 1.3 this week.

I would check the fuel tank and pick up jobby in the tank for blockages/restrictions, sound like something simple dunnit?

yea and its really pissing me off now :) i did think it was icing up due to the bolt on filter buts its the same with normal airbox on. Vapour seperator gunna be ordered then a flush of all the lines and tank sender out i think.

if that lot doesnt work a can of petrol and a lighter lol

cheers mate

Had similar problems I cleansed out the carb and put a 2nd filter between the  vapour separator and the carb

i have had a similar problem where driving up hill or putting the car under load it would cough and splutter as if it was being starved of fuel took it to my mates dad he told me to get rid of the fuel filter and nip the line that goes back to the fuel tank.
I did this and went out on a little run up some rather steep hills which i knew the car would have problems going up on full throttle but to my surprise it flew up no problems not even one cough or splutter i even thought with me nipping up the pipe that returns to the fuel tank it would flood the car on tick over but i had to stop at a number of traffic lights and it ticked over fine the car used to tick over at 1500 revs now it ticks over at about 1200. So my problem seems to have been sorted touch wood :D

did you actually check the warm air flap was opening? also it wont do anything unless the pipe from the exhaust manifold shroud to the airbox is fitted

just a up date i removed the mole grips off the pipe that run back to the fuel tank this morning, drove to the end of the road and the car started to cough and splutter again. I have now disconnected the returns pipe. I will  run her for a day or so and see if anything else happens  :P

Cheers wardy if you could let me know what happens that would be brilliant. Not sure how it will affect fuel economy by removing return pipe?

And rubjonny I sucked the vacuum pipe and the flap moved so I'm assuming it's doing it's job?

Thanks for your ideas/help guys
