Some sort of fuel problem but dont know what HELP PLEASE

Im restoring a mk1 golf but the guy who had it before has fitted a 8v mk2 golf engine and hasnt got it running
The car isnt getting any fuel so ive opened up the airflow sensor plate and thats sending fuel to the injectors but its not spraying out of them so i dont know if they are dead and need new ones. After playing about with the injectors i took the end off and gentley open the needle and turned the ignition on and they sprayed fine but as soon as i let go of the needle it stops. Would you say the injectors are dead or is the fuel not got the pressure to push the needle to let the injector spary ?

Here is a photo its the kjet engine

Ive had a look in the Haynes manual and couldnt find how to do a pressure test  :dontknow:

I did find the cold start and thermo time switch tests, I will give these a go too as ive found out after reading on this site they could be the problem too.

I also found out that fuel will not come out of the injectors if i just pull them out of the engine and turn the car over ( strange cars these VW's    )

This site has loads of info in glad ive found it. But if anyone can tell me how to do the pressure test i would be more happy or where to find it in the Haynes manual

Thanks
Dave

I had a go at this engine again last night but no luck at all

ive tested the cold start and thermo time switch both seem to be working fine. I found out how to do the pressure test but carnt do it because the fuel relay isnt there who ever put this engine in and the loom have bypassed the relay. I think its going to be better to fit a new engine and loom if not im never going to work out what other things have been bypassed. The cold start valve has also been played with and that works on a switch that you have to press  :banghead:

Whats a fuel relay?

It says in the haynes manual there is a fuel relay with a 13amp fuse on the top. It says somthing about taking the relay out and making a jumper wire from L13 to L14 and thats when i stopped reading it as there was no relay.

Fuel pump relay? Yes, you'll need one of these. Is your fuel pump working? If it is, then its unsafe beceuase the fuel pump relay is designed to shut fuel off in a crash situation. Search thrugh grungeisdead's posts for a vivid example.

Yeah its working as soon as you turn the key but it seems to stay on all the time until you turn the keys back off and thats not right. Dont know what they have done but i dont like it

Ok but why did that prevent you doing a fuel pressure test? And what model is the car?

are you running the mk2 pump and accumulator????

I stopped as i couldnt find the relay on the fuse board or where L13 an L14 was as its not wrote on the fuse board. Dont think even if i could find it that the wires would end up going to the pump as like ive said somone has bypassed it.

As for the model im not too sure all i know is its a 1983/84 mk1 golf soft top they guy where we got it from said the engine thats in the car came from a mk2 golf

so you have good spark!
unbolt the tank side of the fuel filter,(under bonnet)in a jar and see if you have fuel, going to the filter, still could be a pressure thing mk2 run a diff pump set up for a reason, :dontknow: then if you have fuel there you need to move on to the fuel distributor after that i will speak with you tomoz, :dontknow:
