Smell Of Petrol

Have just started to notice that after I've been a spin in my Mk1 golf gti cab there is the smell of petrol coming from a under the rear wheel. Sort of from where the fuel filler neck is.

Can't see that anything is leaking so could this just be from the breather pipes, or should I take a closer look.

cheers

Check/replace the O-ring under the sender unit in the top of the fuel tank - can often be that only about ?2 to fix!

Do you get to this under the rear seats in the car, surely you don't have to drop the tank.

Also any idea of a part number as my local Vdub garage always seem to order me the wrong parts, with the only benefit being the bird in there is a complete babe.

Cheers buddy

Yup, under rear seat, remove the plate with the 3 screws and twist out the sender. Really easy job. don't know the part number of top of my head but if she really is a babe at your local dealer, surely you need an excuse to keep going back?!

I had the same prob, but on mine the hose between the filler neck and fuel tank had loads of cracks in, after while it split, and petrol pi**ed out everywhere!!

Probaly the sender unit seal through , just though id mention it,

might be worth checking anyway.

PS could i have part no. for the seal as well, as my sender unit is broke and i need to fix/replace it.

Hope it fixes it

I'll show you when you come up if you like.  It's on the driver's side under the rear seat about 4 inches from the front of the seat.
