Sender Unit And Fuel Type

Hi I Own A 1.6 1983 Mk1 Jetta running on weber carbs and have gone and accidentally snapped the sender unit in half (dumbass) so am after a new one but all lines have lead to a dead end. And also does it need to have lead replacement or will it run fine without?
