Rusted fuel pipe (to tank)

Rusted fuel pipe (to tank)

Just went to fill up and ended up putting a gallon of fuel on the forecourt floor - ooops - no smoking!!

The fuel filler pipe has rusted through just inside the filler cap and the constant slamming in of the petrol pump nozzle has broken through hence the spillage at the garage.

Can you tell me if this is a big job to sort? Can I just get the pipe from filler cap to tank replaced or is it more than this? Any idea of the parts cost as well?

Appreciated!

Simon

Very easy job, did the same on my car not long after I brought it, and it's a really common problem on golfs because the mud and muck collects around the pipe meaning when it gets wet it stays wet for ages, hence rusts through.

Mine was pretty bad :

Shouldn't take more than about an hour to get the old one off and fit the new one, but make sure you drain your tank first!!

Also a good tip is before you put the new one on, give it a good few coats of hammerite, stops the same problem re-occuring, as they normally only come with a thin layer of black paint on.

I also got the underseal out, and undersealed all around the areas on the inside of the rear quater where it attaches to the car, stops any potantial rust starting there, or getting any worse if it already exists.

Mine is a K-jet engine, but luckily none of the rust had fallen into the tank when I took it apart, as it was all held together with rather a lot of mud. I disconnected the pipe at the bottom first before interfering with it, so any rust that did fall down the pipe didn't end up in the tank.
