Rust in fuel filler

Hi,

I am looking at a Golf GTI TR1 to buy. The body is in great condition, no rust no scratches. However when I opened the fuel cap and looked inside the filler pipe it was all rusted. No holes but rust all the same. Should I be really worried about this? The car was running well when I took it for a test drive, but I wonder how it would do on a longer drive, when it really warms up.

The car is priced at ?1850. How much does it cost to get the fuel filler/tank replaced and is this a sign that I need to do that?

Thanks
Jenifur

TR1 ????

If the rust is caught early enough then Budget ?60-?100 to have  a filler supplied and fitted.  Add another ?100 for a new pattern tank or ?350 for a VW one fitted.

Hi, Most Golfs eventually suffer from this. It turns up all the time on the forum. The real problem is that it eventually blocks the fuel suction strainer in the tank and then the fuel filter, bad running sets in and then its a real pain to deal with it. Having said that….these cars canrun for years with it, its the luck of the draw as to how bad it is when you get the car.

My new mk1 badly needs the fuel filler neck replacing.
Has someone seen or written a guide to replacing it?

I bought the Bentleys manual, but that tells you how to replace the fuel tank, not the filler pipe, doh!!

The filler pipe is a simple job……….undo the 3 screws on the body behind the filler cap…………undo the bolt on the inner wing….undo the return pipes on the side of the pipe neck……and the clip on the pipe at the tank end………………….remove old pipe fit new one in reverse order…just make sure you have minimal fuel in the tank!!!! & remember to fit the packing plastic/foam that sits between the body and the neck on its inner edge

you can also use one of the telescopic arial type magnets to have a sweep of the fuel tank if your wrried about metal bits in there, its best done through the inspection hatch under the seat though, removing the tank and cleaning it out is the 100% way but it depends what facilitys you have as its not ideal doing it on a driveway with axle stands!!!

Cheers, yeah i've had a sweep of the tank which didn't seem too bad.

Need to order the filler neck soon, do you get the packing plastic/foam with the new pipe?
Are there any replacements for the standard steel pipe?
Anyone make an aluminium or a plastic one?

Try the guide at the bottom. I had the help of early-1800 and job seemed extremely straight forward. Had slight signs of rust on the inside of the filler neck but when removed and taken all the crud off it, it was knackered. So definatly get that filler neck replaced ASAP, if your lucky thats all you will need to replace.

If you cant get a SS one and are worried then why not get a standard one from GSF etc. Then paint up to provide extra protection when fitted, build up a few coats if you wanted to.
