Replacing Flexible Fuel Pipes to Tank- 1982 1487cc

Hi

I have tried to trim and add in a section to cracked and leaking flexible fuel hose from and to the petrol tank where they fit onto the solid pipes along the underbody. I am now soaked in petrol with anasty ras and stuck.

They just kept splitting as they are clearly hardened all the way to the tank, or at least beyond where I can work on them, so must be replaced. Hoses are currently detached and blanked off (with  guitar Jack plugs, gentle ends and right diameter). Sadly car has full tank of petrol - it would wouldn't it! So this small job is potentially getting major (dropping rear transverse suspension member, etc.)

Do I HAVE to remove the petrol tank to replace the hoses?……….. Haynes holds out the hope of a work around….

Its an 1982 Mk1. Can I get at the other end of the two flexible hoses through the inspection panel and hence detach them and use string to pull through the new hose?

Thanks for any help.

PS I am an engineer and don't need an H+S lecture.

you can get at the flex pipes from the instection panel and a bit of string to pull the new ones through would work

i would think you need to remove the tank to replace, but if you slacken the strips off it might give you a bit more room to move

hth :)

As jellybelly says, slacken the tanks straps to get a bit more room.

Buy new fuel hose from any motor shop, I got mine from Motor World. Get more than you need. Quite cheap.

Undo the old hose, tie new to old and pull through, fit new hose clips when cut to length.

Thanks. Saw the picture of the sender in Haynes and hoped this was possible. Wondering if the petrol would stop leaking when I break the syphon effect by disconnecting the hoses at the tank this way…as it seems the hose connection is above the tank?

If I can stop the flow and work with the tan in palce, however "relaxed" then eveything else will be easy. ish.

Everything stinks of petrol here. I have pertrol rash where it was trapped under my watch and in the clothes I was wearing. And it was just a quick job. I'll let the orum know how it goes for the future.

Best,

when you take the pipes off the sender under the inspection you will only have what is left in the pipes to leak out

tanks will stay as it is not leakage :)

P.S. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.

Protect your hands with gloves and barrier cream / moisturiser lotion up your arms.

Get access to the top of the tank and fuel sender under the rear seat. Tie some string onto the hoses.

ID, Colour code, tape each hose, each one has a different function, supply and return.

Cut the rigid hose clips off, tie some string on, so not to lose them

Once removed from the fuel sender fuel should not leak out from the tank. Residual fuel to the engine may leak out.

Disconnect the hoses at the bottom pipes, remove one hose at a time,.

Remember to tie the new hose on before removing the old one.

Cool, that was what I was hoping from the pics. In fact we worked out a great tip for people disconnecteing that pipe to work on them for whatever reason. Disconnect at the sender first to break the siphon - if its easy enough to do. I'll find out tomorrow…

You can install thicker modern 6mm without movin the tank. That's the good news. All done and fine. Lots of lessons.

While I protected myself from fire and had a fire extinguisher handy the advice about barrier cream etc. is absoutely vital.  Now have serious blisers and will lose the skin all around where my sleeves were rolled up.

I was not expecting to have to deal with this amount of petrol of course. Be prepared! Don't allow it to be held against your skin. Disconnecting the hoses at the tank sender brakes the siphon and saves all this. There are only two spring clips holding the back seat in plave  so why wouldn't you - with foreknowledge.

Acually connecting a pipe to the fuel pipe from above above the level of the tank and blowing the fuel back into the fuel tank would have done the same. Inhaling petrol fumes can kill. Accidents are mainly sucking not blowing but contra indicated. Could use a foot pump..
