reccommend a performance manifold please

hi i fitted a ashley 4-1 manifold at the weekend but once i lowered back down off the ramps i realised where the 4 pipes join to one was only about 1 and 1/2 inches off the floor and sitting a lot lower than the sump. so it needs changing asap. i have seen janspeed do a 4-2-1, would this give more ground clearance?  :dontknow: or will i have to go back to standard manifold and downpipe cheers james

have you lowered the mk1 in the 1st place?

yep it has been lowered and on 13 inch wheels, will have to put a standard downpipe back on if i cant get a performance one to fit

What engine and mods does it have?

pipe sits really low about 1 1/2 inches off the floor, standard 1.8 8v gti on 13inch wheels with coilovers

well i think your gonna have this problem with a few aftermarket exhausts, i would consider the route of a custom manifold perhaps, but your probly talking some money,

is it def for a mk1 thou

Just use the standard manifold, you'll see no gain with an aftermarket one on a standard engine. And you'll save money and fitting hassles too!

what was the outcome in the end m8 you sort it or revert to standard

Having previously fitted an Italian stainless manifold to my first cab, the only outcome was lots of cash outlay (£500+), the handbrake was cooked and absolutely no extra gain in performance.

On my second trip around the block with the new cab, I completely failed to find an exhaust that would fit and reverted to OEM parts. The outcome was less cash outlay (£60) and no exhaust fumes in the car.

What about the ebay special ss manifolds, has anyone any experience of these? I'm thinking about fitting one to my 1800 GTI and would appreciate some advice before wasting my money and giving the exhaust fitter a hard time (beats crawling around on the floor)!!

Yes,

Most are ill-fitting and not worth the £150(ish) that they cost.

The performance is not improved and they tend to fight for space with either the steering column or/and the off-side drive shaft.

agreed. i had an ashley 4 branch on a standard engine. no gains, or very minimum at best. the bloke at rally design will tell you that before he sells you one too.

OK, it sounds as if the ashley is the best. If only they did it in SS.

My motor has polished and ported head,  matched to the manifolds with a piper 290 cam, custom SS exhaust (minus manifold/downpipe) and K&N filter. I also have a 1600 metering head, audi throttle body and 16v WUR to fit when when I get time.

Once the inlet manifold has been attacked with a grinder/polished internally and opened up for the TB  I would expect a heat wrapped performance manifold to compliment the mods I have once all fitted and fuel pressures checked/set and the car RR tuned as per paul c's recommendations i've previously read.

Hence my curiosity. I'm in for keeping this car for quite a while so would prefer SS for corrosion issues etc.
