Powder coating fuel tank?

Powder coating fuel tank?

I'm planning on having my fuel tank powder coated to help stop it rusting.

Question is, as there is a large hole in the tank where the fuel sender/lift pump slots in, what will happen if any powder coat gets inside the tank?

You think it will be alright or should I try to plug the hole as best as possible before having it coated?

When it's powder coated they bake the powder on in an oven. I wouldn't worry about any getting in side the tank as it'll probably bake on. However, before you fit it, flush the tank through with compressed air (Nitrogen would be best but is expensive - less moisture in the gas). Alternatively you could use water but make sure it's fully dried before fitting.

If you're still worried then Frosts do a tank repair formula that seals the inside of the tank. Try www.frost.co.uk.

Ask the powder coaters to seal the hole before they coat it. They will probably shot blast the old paint off first, and you certainly don't want any of that in the fuel system.

I'm not sure what petrol would do to the powder coat, but it may well dissolve it over time (not 100% sure - but I wouldn't risk it).
