Pierberg 2E carb->manifold attachment

Hiya all,

I have a 1991 Clipper Cabriolet which isn't running right - on examination, the carbs aren't attached to the manifold any more - the rubber has totally perished! The Haynes Book Of Lies is about as much use as usual, I can't figure out if the rubber is replacable or not? It looks like it's somehow rivited to the carb body. Oh, edited to add: It's a Pierberg.

(Tempted to just get a reconned one from e-bay, but ?135 is more than I'd like to pay - the hood isn't in a brilliant state anyway and I'm not 100% certain that's the only trouble with it, but the main problem with the whole car just seems to be the state of the carb)

Flange is replacable (VW part no - 026 129 761 E), should be sandwiched between carb and inlet. If you stump up ?130+ for a new carb you might as well find and upgrade to a weber.

Thanks, I'll take a trip to GSF in the week and get it - once I have one I should be able to figure out how to get the old one off. Don't the Webers have a manual choke? I'd have thought that meant it wasn't just a drop-in replacement.

They do, but it comes with a cable/handle and appropriate bracket. There should already be a hole in the bulkhead (will have a blanking grommit in it) and there is a removable plastic cover in the dash to the left of the steering wheel for the choke handle. You would have to do someting with the water feed normally used by the Pierburg autochoke.

I would stick with trying to sort yours first though. While you're at it worth replacing all the vacuum hoses on it. They often split, turn porous or perish with age and the vacuum system on the 2E2 is quite critical. You can get a couple of metres for a ?5 from a motor factor.

Replaced the manifold and she's running better than she was but still rough and no power - I need to recheck the connections though. Clouds of smoke from under the carb somewhere but I hope that's just where various crap ended up on the manifolds after taking the carb off :|

did you replace the flange at the base of the carb? i jus had to do this to my driver. if it's still leaking there will be what looks like oil on the metal plate at the base of the carb not actually oil its petrol as when air is gettin in petrol is also getting out! for the ?20 the flange costs at gsf you'll feel the benefit in fuel economy (at least i did)!

to replace it when you take carb off should be two nuts holding the flange to base of carb off new one on jobs a goodin  :D

dunno if i just wasted my time and you've already fixed it? but it's nice to feel clever lol.

Yup! Trouble is, I think it's been bust for a while and most of the connections into the carb are shot where it's been rattling round loose. The clouds of smoke from the engine when I start her up is coolant that's spilt on top of the engine because one of the connections into the waxstat has broken off. Looks like at least one bust vacuum connection though means she won't even run without my foot half way to the floor on the accelerator, so I'll need to recheck the connections. (I did have a Pierburg workshop manual in PDF format somewhere, it's much better than the Haynes book which isn't very clear on the vacuum connections at all)

Not sure if you mean this one, but is a good 2E2 manual…
