Petrol/fuel tank differences?

Hey guys n gals,

Got to take out and repair my fuel tank as its got a hole, or just buy a replacement, which is prob easier as i cant weld or even own a welder………..which maybe i shall rectify one day being a mk1 owner

Anyway if im looking to replace will any mk1 golf fuel tank be ok? Mine is a gti tin top on an 82 reg so series 2. Will cab, non injection tanks be the same?

Just to add mine is running bike carbs with a facet fuel pump. That may make a difference if the tanks vary between carb and injection models?

Thanks,
Dean.

needs to be mk1 gti tintop tank specifically, these have internal swirl pot and outlet on the bottom. carby wont work unless you also add lift pump and reservoir from late mk1 cab/rocco injection. diesel tank is similar but no swirl pot so not a good idea as it might kill the fuel pump as it could run dry when cornering

the diesel tank has a swirl pot so it will be fine, the only difference is the filter inside the tank, the gti filter is a finer mesh than the diesel one
Bert

Thats not a rod knockin, its a diesel stupid! floppy top and 1 tin top

worst case you could add the lifter pump and a swirl pot underneath, that way you can just get a bog std carby tank. bit of a pain though as you'll have to splice into the main pump wiring and add a 3 pin plug for it (can use the headlight adjust motor plug off mk2 golf, they all have them)

lol.

Basically im gonna do a temporary patch using petro patch. I just need it to hold the fuel whilst I get the facet pump up n running and sort out any issues etc.

Then when its at the body shop I shall either remove and ask them to weld or buy another one. Not gonna buy used as could end up with the same problem in a few years so would rather spend the extra on new. Or saying that get this one patched and put in a tank lining kit. POR do them and from what ive read its good.

which is better purchase? a GTI tank (presuming this has everything included) or adding the later bits to a carb tank?
