Orange Gel like substance in fuel filter

hi folks,
just recently ran my '93 golf cabrio after it sat unused for around 5 weeks.initially it ran fine(albeit only for a couple of miles) but soon became pretty lumpy .so up with the bonnet and noticed an orange rusty coloured substance in the fuel filter,it looked like it was seperating from the petrol and can only describe what it looked like as a gel/thin jelly type liquid.
initial googling suggests that it is water in the fuel tank.is this correct……anyone experieced this problem before? and will a clean of the fuel tank and lines fix the problem.?the fuel filler neck is only a couple of years old and looks relatively good still.

thanks as always
rob

Yea could be water - try cleaning the tank out (access via rear seat hatch) then run some Forte fuel treatment through it. Change the filter first though  :)

You might need to replace the filler neck. If there is a hole in it (which you should be able to see if you inspect it where you put the fuel in), then you might be getting dirty road water spray off the rear wheel entering the fuel tank.
