Obviously you want to be checking the filler neck for rust, and also its worth taking the level sender out of the fuel tank and shining a tourch in there to check for rustickes, and also have a look at the level sender make sure thats not all crusty. Assuming the carb has the feed/return pipes to the level sender not 100% sure either way?

same problem
i drive a 89 karman clipper and im having the same proplem thought it was the carb (peirburg2e2) after cleaning and testing it wasent,
i noticed the in flow feul filter was dirty so i changed that and blew the pipe out and it ran perfect for about an hour then back to sluggin.
im takin the tank off this weekend to clean it out and change the neck might change feul lines too ill let you know how i get on with it

engine running problems
Try this mate, i was described this by a top vag man!!!! Found this on here which shows u how to do it. I have the same problem goin to try this on wednesday, 1.8 8v 1983 gti.

All of the crap in the tank is rust particles from the filler neck so is therefore metal.
Get a good magnet on a stick and drop (rather lower than drop) it in through the sender unit hole and the particles will stick to the magnet like sh1t to a bed sheet.
Takes ages and it keeps sticking to the fuel tank but hey..!
Dont use a fag lighter or candle, use a torch or this may wreck the garage roof and the smell of burning hair takes ages to get rid of.
