Need help with the fueling cap under the rear seats (+pics)

Hi,
I have just bought this 1983 1.5 GX of someone on here.

Very pleased with it. Thankyou!

BUT I have been searching on here for the answer to my problem which is, jittering then loss of speed then it stalls and then I have to wait for a couple of minutes again to start up. which is very frustrating.

I have looked around on here, Im not completely sure it is this, but I think it could be dirt in my petrol tank that is causing it, as I opened the filler cap for the petrol, I found that there was rust inside on the left hand side (nearly a hole) and it was very flaky.
The inline fuel filter in the engine bay is quite dirty so I have bought a new one which I have put on as of yet.  (also should the pumping of petrol be quite constant?) So thats dirty………

SOOOOOoooo….. I followed this

The Mk1 Golf Owners Club

But I cant get the cap of, I know you twist but it wont budge!
So i dont know what to do!! please help me as I need it to be fixed asap. :'(

Im pretty sure everything on it is original and standard if that helps.

the caps are tight, i used a rubber mallet and friend and 2 mini crow bars, got a friend keeping pressure on a lug with the mini crowbar, while i held the other bar and giving it some welly with the mallet, only give it the big one as a last measure as you dont want to break off the lugs, its best to go gingerly with the mallet to start with and if you find your giving it a hell off smack then i surgest your mate is not putting his back into it enough

you may find another person may reply with a better solution but this worked for me

ahh right, we tried hitting it from 2 sides with two screw drivers with hammers. It didnt work though.
the arrow says that it is clockwise, is this correct? or is it either way?

thanks again

no its correct, you got to keep pressure on it one side aother wise the the flex on it will just make it bounce and absorb the the energy of the mallet,

if its dirty clean it out but you also said you may have a hole in the filler neck and rusty particles falling off so get this sorted as it will just clog up again but not over night

Hey,

Glad you've enjoyed the Golf!

She's a lovely beast and I have missed her alot - just moving onto another Golf project now.
