or use a carby mk1 tank then fit later cabrio/scirocco or g40 shape polo lift pump & plastic fuel reservoir from under the car.
with both of these options you can use a gti mk1 main pump, or similar inline fuel pump with enough spec to handle your final target engine spec

you have 2 choices. either fit mk1 gti tank, buy L pipe from tank to pump from crazyquiff or make up somethign similar.

Can you clarify this a little ?
when you say a later cabrio /scirocco or g40, what sort of year ? i have a clipper cabrio and the sender unit doesn't have a pick up pump so i need to replace this, its the next thing on my to-do list i've noticed a lot of senders have a screw collar type fitting by mine is a bayonet style fitting into the tank ? and why do we need the plastic fuel reservoir ?
sorry to thread jack but it seems related ?
cheers

the plastic reservoir is to ensure the main pump never runs dry, say if you are cornering. without it the pump will overheat and eventually die if it runs dry because it needs fuel to lubricate the internals
