mk1 16v KR not firing up
Hi all,
Just trying to get the mk1 started and it just wont fire up, tried spraying a bit of fuel in the throttle body and it fired up no bother so i am thinking that its some thing to do with getting fuel through
So far I have checked the following…..
Fuel pump - working fine as priming up and sending fuel to the metering head
The flapper thing in the metering head - seems fine as its jumping when trying to fire
firing order - I have an ABF dizzy cap with the firing order at 1342 and going anticlockwise from the top right plug on the dizzy cap
But what about vacuum hoses are these really important ????? I have a one coming from the ECU and one at the back end of the air box witch are no connected to any thing
I also don't have the cold start connected as I don't no how it goes so if any body knows please let me no
Any help is much appreciated

wire your fuel pump so that its running without the engine turning over and then lift the flap in the meteringhead when you do this it should spray the fuel though the injectors you should be able to hear this happening if not problem with fuel pressure or metering head as i`m haveing the same problem but my car will start but will not take throttle heres my thread

It was a GTI cabby originally mate but the last owner blew the lump up and put a diesel in LOL
I have now installed a KR lump, ECU and loom and a 8v gti fuel pump

Just how did you determine that the air sensor (flapper thing I believe you mean) was moving while trying to fire? Also, did you check the rest position of the air sensor plate and also movement both with and without fuel pressure?
Yes, vacuum lines missing can cause a no start situation. The line to the ignition control box is too small to cause this and I can't understand what the other one is so can't say. If the total size of the vacuum (false air entering the engine) is about 1/4" in diameter, then it could cause the engine not to start.
Lack of a cold start valve will make the engine hard to start, maybe even not want to start if other things are not correct, i.e. air sensor position, vacuum leaks, timing, cranking speed, etc. etc. But the fact that it starts when you dump a bit of fuel in does indicate things are not so grave.

mine did this when it had a blocked fuel filter, worth a try as its an easy swap on a mk1 as it in the engine bay. what fuel pump & lines did you use, mk1 gti?

I took the bottom half of the air box off and looked up from underneath the mk1 to see if it was moving up and down when trying to start
Will take another look at the hoses
Cheers

Mk1 fuel pump, but I have put clear fuel lines in to see it the fuel was getting to the metering head
To me every thing seems fine apart from not getting fuel from the metering head to injectors :dontknow:

can you hear the fuel going back down the return line ??? thats what mines dose

never checked mate would this happen it it wasn't going to the injectors ??
also after a few times trying to start it the pump seems to make a different noise as if its pressured up to much with it not feeding the injectors

on mine fuel was getting to the metering head but there wasnt enough fuel pressure at tyhe metering head to open the injectors, due to the clogged filter. once the filter was replaced all was well. its a cheap and easy thing to try so get it done
if that fails then what you need is a set of fuel pressure gauges so you can see exactly what is going on at the metering head

on mine the fuel is getting to the metering head then going down the return line ?? as if the injectors are blocked but i have put 4 brand new bosch injectors in , it will start allways but will not take throttle ?? i have my mk1 gti fuel pump witch is also brand new on a switch and if i turn the pump on and lift the flap in the meteringhead no fuel gets to the injectors but i can hear the fuel going down the return line so thats how im going to get another metering head . have a look at my threads on page one and see the things i have tryed to fix it i have spent about ?300 and it runs the same so all a waste of cash

well still no luck tried stripping the metering head totally down and cleaned it up, put back together and even tried rigging the pump up constant but no luck still
Was then going to try getting a new fuel filter but the pump wont work at all now, think it has some thing to do with putting it on constant
Where can I get a fuel pressure tester form ???

Any body :dontknow:
Also what about the fuel lines (the send mainly) do they have to be of a certain diameter ??

dunno if you messed with the accumulator at all but if you have the pipes on the wrong way the pump will start to struggle( i did ). also i would connect your pipes to the ecu all that you need is a T peice you will get the pipe no problem. Your fuel pipe has to be 8mm i am pretty sure. Thats what i have on mines and no problems so far.i know you have alreayd said you have the plugs on the right order but just to be certain

from looking at the dizzy straight on
and obviously the order from the cam side 1 2 3 4

Will try the above thanks
Another thing I was thinking of, when looking into the bay from the front of the mk1 there are two fuel lines going into the right hand side of the engine (think this is the cold start :dontknow: ), the send is primed up but not the return could this have something to do with it not firing
Was wondering if the return from what i have described above might go to the injectors before returning to the tank
Or to put it another way
Fuel goes to the metering head from tank
Then to the cold start thing as i have described LOL
Then back to the metering head by the return, priming the injectors
Then when injectors are primed return to the tank
:dontknow: :dontknow:
thanks :y:

sounds liek the warm up regulator, what this does is regulate the fuel pressure above the metering pin, which changes the ammount of force required to move the pin, and in turn changes how much fuel is injected for any given volume of air sucked in by the engine. if its not letting fuel thru it then that would suggest that it is blocked, and could be causing the problems that you are seeing.
Ideally you want to get a proper set of k-jet pressure gauge, this will show you exactly what is going on.
