intermittent nosiy fuel pump - spluttering...

Hi, my fuel pump has been whining for a few months now and have gotten used to it (shouldnt have I know) its now getting noisier and seemingly making a faster whirring whine coupled with the odd splutter....is the pump finally on its last legs??

I have the same problem with a new fuel pump I've changed the accumulator to it hasn't helped we think its the pump that has broke loose in the tank cause mine doesn't stutter if I have more than have a tank of fuel

if its a post-83 cabrio there will be a lift pump in the tank, could be that is dead or wiring to it is faulty

Cheers guys, have replaced the fuel pump which has got rid of the whinning...but theres an intermittent sort of buzz noise now (was probably drowned out previously by the pump whine!) reckon this could be the lift pump that I can here now? if so where can i get a replacement, gsf dont stock them...any thoughts if it is this and if so what or where can i get one. gsf sell the lift pumps yes, its the same as a mk2 one. its just the bare pump they supply so you have to remove the level sender assembly from the tank then swap the pump over. see if you can track down the noise, the lift pump is under the roudn metal disc under the rear seat, put your ear to it
